MILAN (Sporting Alert) —
Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola says his team will be going for a win when it takes on
AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Barcelona lead Group H on 10-points, two more than Milan and win on Wednesday would see the defending champion topping the group with one match left to play.
Avoiding defeat would also mean’s the Guardiola’s side would still be in position to win the group, but the boss says he wants a win in Milan
“We will be ourselves when we go out onto the pitch. We are not playing for a draw, we want to win,” said Guardiola.
Milan, which has been undefeated in its last eight-games, scored very early and very late against Barcelona when these two sides met in the opening group contest on September 13, and Guardiola has warned his team to be aggressive from the start.
“We can’t start off playing at 70 or 80% of our potential,” said, adding Milan “is a team that is used to playing possession football and they are good with dead balls.”
He added: “When you play against an opponent like Milan there is a sense of tradition, of history… It’s a real honour to play against such a prestigious rival.
''The most important thing for us is to give a good impression in front of a country with a rich footballing tradition and against such a historic team like Milan.”
Barcelona will have to overcome the absence of influential midfielder Andres Iniesta, who picked a muscle injury in the 4-0 win at Zaragoza at the weekend and is out.
Xavi, Sergio Busquets and Cesc Fabregas are expected to start in the middle, alongside Lionel Messi, David Villa and Alexis Sanchez.
Milan will more than likely start with a team, which will includ former Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Robinho and Clarence Seedorf and Brazilian forward Alexandre Pato, who gave Milan a shocking 30 seconds lead in the 2-2 draw in their opening group game at the Nou Camp.
