2) You should focus your training on several major compound exercises
This one is also very important. Everybody likes curling and doing flys and leg extensions, but also avoid rowing, chins, squatting, etc. The reason for this is simple: compounds are hard, require near perfect form, and add the mental toughness component into the training. People also wrongly think that, exemplum gratia, pullups work the biceps a lot more ineffectively than curls do, and as most beginners tend to think they know what's best for their bicep, they sit and enjoy themselves curling a dumbbell, without even sweating.

Now, does that mean isolation exercises are to be completely thrown out? My stand here is no, and here's why: I am a bodybuilder. Not a powerlifter, not a strongman, not an athlete looking for sport-specific performance enhancements. My goal is to build muscle, and in that process, isolation exercises sure do have their rightful place, so I do include them into my workout routines (although they are stapled upon compounds).
