The ongoing takeover saga at Arsenal FC, the English Premier League club, has taken a dramatic twist with the news that Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith, who owns nearly 16 per cent of the Gunners, has appointed a bank to sell her stake.
The decision to appoint a bank suggests that either Lady Bracewell-Smith does not wish to sell her stake to one of the two obvious candidates - Stan Kroenke and Alisher Usmanov - or she wishes to secure the best price from the two men, who have been competing for control of Arsenal for a number of months. Usmanov's Red and White Holdings own 26 per cent of Arsenal, while Kroenke has 29.9 per cent. Should either men secure Lady Bracewell-Smith's stake, he would be obliged to make a takeover offer for 100 per cent ownership of Arsenal.
'The former Arsenal director, who resigned from the board in 2008, has hired bankers Blackstone to find a buyer for the fourth-largest share in the club,' reports Sky Sports, which broke the news.
The London Evening Standard added: 'Any deal would probably value Arsenal at well above £500 million. That suggests Bracewell Smith could get £80 million if she sells out altogether.'
Kroenke is particularly well-placed to make an offer for Arsenal at this time. Should he decide to go ahead with an Arsenal takeover bid, he will have plenty of funds at his disposal, with his bank balance likely to be boosted by almost US$300 million from the expected sale of the St Louis Rams, a franchise of which he owns 40 per cent.
