VESELIN VUJOVIC: THE BALKAN GENIUS
Veselin Vujovic was born on January 19, 1961 in Cerinje (Montenegro). That day not only had born one of the best handball players ever, but also one of the most charismatic and popular ones. His dishevelled beard and tall and slim body of 197 centimeters in height were characteristics in the probably most talented player of this sport.
Vujovic made his debut on 1980 in the team of his life, Metaloplastika Sabac. There, he leaded an unique generation of Yugoslavian players with Vukovic, Portner, Isakovic or Mirko Basic. With Metaloplastika, he won 7 Leagues, 6 National Cups and 2 European Cups (1985 and 1986).
In the left back, Vujovic was the most decisive player of the time. His powerful shots and his unequalled technical quality allowed him to control all the aspects of the offensive game being, for many people, the most complete player ever.
Yugoslavia's leader in the 80s
Most of that Metaloplastika's players played for Yugoslavia also in the international tournaments. Because of it, that Balkan side was known by heart, combining the extraordinary quality of the squad with an almost perfect colective synchronization. Vujovic won, with Yugoslavia, the Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles 1984, the World Championship in Switzerland two years after that and the bronze medal in Seul 1988. That Olympic Games were the end of a glorious age for a country with few years of peace ahead.
Clash between Atletico and Barcelona for his transfer
Vujovic was the most desired player of the time, so it was clear that he would play in a more competitive European league soon. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona strove during a year to get his signing. Finally the Blaugranas convinced the Montenegrin after paying 10 million pesetas to Metaloplastika. Atletico Madrid even had announced offially his signing on August, 1987 but efforts made by the Catalan club were successful and Vujovic was introduced next May, after a hard struggle between the three clubs involved.
With Barça, Vujovic won 4 Leagues, 1 Cup and the desired European Cup in the 1990-91 season. A knee ligament torn during his last campaign as a Blaugrana stopped his career, which was not the same again. However, Vujovic ended his days as a player in Granollers, where he continued giving master classes of handball, helping the club to win the EHF Cup in 1995.
A temperamental player and coach
Few days after announcing his retirement, Vujovic was called by Metaloplastika to become their coach. In the 1996 European Championship, he helped Zivkovic (the coach of the national team with he had been world champion ten years before) as a part of the technical staff of the Yugoslavian NT. That tournament would be remembered because of the Vujovic's temporary return to the courts, due to the injuries of Perunicic and Jovanovic.
The negative side of this great player was his strong character. Vujovic was booked more than once due to unsportsmanklike conduct. Although, he always regretted afterwards. He was punished for eight months due to a brawl on the court, during his last season in the Yugoslavian league.
Later, as the BM Ciudad Real's coach, he also was involved in a fight during the Cup Winners Cup final that finally won the Spanish side. This behaviour cost him his coaching post. In 2002, he was called to manage the Serbia and Montenegro national team, where he did a good job until 2006, when his native land became independent. Vujovic did not want to make the tough decision of choosing one bench or another and left office to continue his coaching career in Qatar. Nowadays, Vujovic is the head coach of Macedonian Vardar.
