Sanz built a team that won us two Champions' League title. Perez came along and reinforced it with Figo and Zidane.... won Real Madrid's third title in 5 years. At the end of the CL Final in 2002, the team consists of Zidane, Figo, Raul, Roberto Carlos, Makelele, Iker and Hierro. That team would have been a force for years to come. But then, Perez decided to sell Karanka and Campo in 2002. They were solid players. And then, Makelele, Mcmanaman, Morientes and Hierro the following season. During that span, he only bought two players, Ronaldo and Beckham. Basically, he took away all the depth of the team in 2 year time. He also brought back Cambiasso in 2003, but the team never used him. Ironically, after 2003-2004, Perez did realize that he needed a CM/DM. But he did not know that one of the best midfielders in the world was sitting on his bench. Instead, he bought Garcia and Gravesen. The team went three years without a trophy.
To be fair, he did realize his mistakes after the 2003-2004 season. He did buy Woodgate, Samuel, Ramos and Cicinho in the next few years. There seemed to be a curse with our defenders. Milito did not even pass the physical examination.
Now, in 2014, he won his second CL trophy. The team probably would dominate European football for years to come. He then reinforced it with Kroos and James. I liked both signings, but he also sold 5 players without signing replacement. He knew that Benzema is the only striker on the team, but never seriously looked for a backup until the last two days of the transfer window. Again, he is destroying the depth of the team.
