ANCELOTTI: DESIRABLE QUALITY
Posted on: Sat 04 Dec 2010
Carlo Ancelotti questions whether his team did everything within its power to win recent games but believes a remedy is at hand for today's match against Everton.
The Double-winning Italian recognises that fine margins can make the difference between victory and going close and is happy to welcome John Terry and Michael Essien back into his side, even if his captain won't be at his maximum level physically.
He does so as he reflects on a November that brought three wins from seven games.
'What I did learn?' Ancelotti begins.
'I learnt that we lost some points when we deserved to win but this is normal in football. However sometimes to move on in a bad moment you have to do more than expected and we didn't do enough to move on quickly.
'We weren't lacking character but we were not in focus 100 per cent in the games when we did not win. In Birmingham we played well and also in Newcastle but I think there was not a 100 per cent desire to win.
'You can have desire that is 99 per cent but that is not enough,' he continues.
'In this particular moment of our season we have to have desire to move on quickly. We had the desire to win against Newcastle but it was not 100 per cent. John Terry could make a difference but we have to play as a team and we need to have the support of everyone.'
Terry has been strengthening specific muscles to alleviate the injury that have kept him out of the last four games.
'He trained without problem this week,' Ancelotti reports. 'I think the problem has gone.
'Maybe for the next game he will be 100 per cent because he has trained just three days but in the games he can improve his condition and it is not so important that he has to be 100 per cent. Terry is important for other things. He has good control of the defensive line, he can speak and support the other players and can show character also.'
Similar is expected from another player who returns today having missed the same four matches through injury and suspension.
'Michael Essien like John Terry brings personality, brings character, bring qualities on the pitch,' says the manager who has spoken to the player about the need for self control following the stoppage time red card against Fulham.
'Without Lampard we have difficulty in scoring goals from midfield. Essien was able to score and also for this reason it could be important to have him against Everton.'
While the defence and midfield have been missing regulars, the attack has been less depleted although Didier Drogba has played through a recovery from malaria. Ancelotti is expecting more from the Golden Boot winner too.
'He didn't show his best in the last games because he didn't score a goal, but I think it was a good decision to put him on the pitch because he can show personality and character even if he is not 100 per cent.
'Now he is really better and also the game against Newcastle showed that he played better as well.'
