MANCHESTER United are confident of landing Wesley Sneijder in a £35m deal – provided they can persuade the Dutch ace to lower his wage demands.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has remained in Manchester to hold talks with Wesley Sneijder’s representatives.

But the Inter Milan midfielder will have to accept a £200,000-a-week offer if he wants to secure a move to the Premier League champions.

Sir Alex Ferguson wants Sneijder as a replacement for the retired Paul Scholes, but United would have to meet the £35m release clause in the 27-year-old’s contract.

Starsport understands that United are willing to hand the playmaker a three-year deal worth £200,000 a week, with the option of an extra 12 months.

But Fergie fears Sneijder will snub United and try to engineer a move to Manchester City, who could easily afford a deal worth around £260,000 a week.

But Rio Ferdinand has welcomed the challenge of having to fight for his place in a Manchester Unitedside in which competition promises to be stronger than ever next season.

Ferdinand will have endured mixed feelings this summer after watching Sir Alex Fergusonsplash the cash to strengthen his squad.

As well as landing Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea and England star Ashley Young, Fergie has also drafted in centre-half Phil Jones from Blackburn in a £16m deal.

England Under-21 star Jones has been identified as Ferdinand’s long-term successor for club and country and has even been tipped as a future England captain.

Jones will be hoping to have the same kind of instant impact at United as fellow defender Chris Smalling did in his first Old Trafford campaign.

Smalling slipped seamlessly into Fergie’s side when Ferdinand was injured and proved he has what it takes to make it at the highest level.

He made such an impression on Fergie that United handed him a bumper new deal worth around £60,000 a week.

With Nemanja Vidic claiming the captaincy once again and Jonny Evans also vying for a place in Fergie’s starting line-up, United now have five top-class centre-backs battling for just two positions.

Ferdinand said: “It’s just what the club needs because, as the boss said before, three of the most exper-ienced players at the club have retired.

“So the manager has reinforced in certain positions. This is a club that always evolves.

“Since I’ve been here the team has evolved and I’ve been part of that. That’s what you aim to do as a player.

“It’s not about you as an individual or your personal feelings, it’s all about the club becoming better, more stable and continuing the success we’ve had over the years and the boss has been at the forefront of it all. It’s great to see young players coming through, from the youth ranks and reserves and joining the club.

“Players like Ashley Young and Phil Jones can continue the longevity and the success that we’ve had.”

Ferdinand continues to battle against long-term back and hamstring-related injuries, which have blighted him in recent seasons.

The former England captain has made just 32 league appearances from a possible 76 in the last two campaigns.

He remains one of the first names on Fergie’s team-sheet when fit but knows time waits for no-one at Old Trafford.

Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Edwin van der Sar have all retired to force Fergie into a mini-overhaul of his squad.

And Ferdinand knows he will have to remain at the top of his game if he wants to fend off the challenge of those with youth on their side who are waiting in the wings to succeed him.

Jones will link up with United in Seattle on Friday as part of his new club’s summer tour of the United States, which kicks off tonight with a clash against Steve Nicol’s New England Revolution.

Fergie denies he is kicking off a new era at United though.

But he admits the need for youth has been forced on him following the recent retirements of stalwarts who became part of the furniture at Old Trafford.

Fergie said: “We’ve tried to look ahead and we have an influx of young players coming in to replace the older ones, who are starting to die on their feet!

“It’s obvious the last three years we were well aware of the need to replace Ryan Giggs, but fortunately he’s managed to carry on and still perform the way he does.

“But Gary Neville and Paul Scholes both retired, and Edwin van der Sar, so we were well aware we were going to have to replace them at some point.

“So the work was about that, but we have to make sure we still have the quality in the squad for success.”

Ferdinand knows he better keep up with the Joneses
