Fernando Torres admitted he played through the pain barrier as Liverpool bounced back into the title hunt with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday.

El Nino scored the opener on his return from an adductor injury on a day when the Reds were back to their best after four consecutive defeats.

But he confessed afterwards: "I wasn't really at my best. We knew before the game I couldn't play to 100 per cent because I had some pain in some actions, but in games like this the pain doesn't matter."

Torres took his tally for the season to nine midway through the second half after brushing off Rio Ferdinand and firing home at the near post.

He added: "I feel a bit of pain when I shoot across so I could only shoot towards the near post - it was the only thing I could do!"

The result leaves Liverpool just four points behind the champions and six adrift of league leaders Chelsea.

"I am really happy for the fans and the players and we will enjoy this," said Torres.

"We are in the race again. We knew before the game that we had to win and we did it. Now we have a bit of confidence but we have to keep it going on Wednesday in the Carling Cup against Arsenal.

"Then we have to be focused for Fulham. But we feel like a strong team again because we're working all together like in the past.

"We will see what happens and then look at things at the end."

RAFA REVEALS AQUILANI DEBUT PLAN

Alberto Aquilani could make his Liverpool debut against Arsenal on Wednesday after being named in the squad for our Carling Cup fourth round clash.

The 25-year-old will not start at the Emirates but Benitez is hoping to utilise him as a second-half substitute.

The boss told Liverpoolfc.tv: "He will be with us. He is improving his fitness, so he's in the squad.

"He cannot start at this moment but he will be there and maybe we can give him some minutes. If it's possible we will try to use him."

Benitez believes the Italy international, who hasn't featured since signing from Roma in the summer due to an ankle injury, will add a new dimension to his midfield.

"We can see in every training session that he has quality, game intelligence and good movements," said the Spaniard. "He is a different kind of player for us.

"We talk about using Gerrard deeper sometimes, but maybe in Aquilani we have a player who can play there and pass the ball really well in the final third."

Alberto Aquilani admits the 'incredible' atmosphere generated by Liverpool fans in Sunday's triumph over Manchester United has increased his desire to run out in front of the Kop.

The Italian watched on from the stands as second-half goals from Fernando Torres and David Ngog secured victory against Alex Ferguson's side.

Now, as he closes in on a first-team debut for the Reds, Aquilani has revealed how he can't wait to experience the unique Anfield roar as a Liverpool player.

"It was incredible to be at the stadium on Sunday," he told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"It was one of the best games I have seen so far. I don't normally like to watch a match inside a stadium when I am not playing, but I really enjoyed Sunday.

"When I was in Rome, although the stadium was bigger, it did not have the same atmosphere as here. Because the fans are closer to the pitch at Anfield, you can feel the atmosphere better.

"It was very important to win against United and hopefully it can give us more confidence."

Aquilani made his first appearance in a red jersey last week as the midfielder was handed a 15 minute run out in the reserves' win against Sunderland at Prenton Park.

While the 25-year-old acknowledges he is still short of match fitness, he is already relishing the prospect of a first-team bow.

He said: "It was good to play for the reserves because I haven't played for a long time, but to play for the first-team is something different again and I am looking forward to that.

"I really want to play, but I need to be patient - I know the time will come for me.

"I will be very happy when I make my debut. This is my job, it's what I am here to do, and I am looking forward to it."

With his first-team debut finally on the horizon, Aquilani was keen to highlight the role of his fellow players and the staff at Melwood in helping him settle into life on Merseyside.

He added: "I want to thank all the players and the people at the club because they have been very helpful to me since I arrived here.

"Obviously as Andrea Dossena is here and speaks Italian, he has helped me, but I want to take the opportunity to thank every player.

"It has been difficult, but now I want to build up my confidence and I hope to bring out the best of my game here."
