American air power supremacists often crow about how dominant the US was in the first Gulf War in Iraq (January 17 – February 28, 1991). And it is undeniably true that the Iraqis were overwhelmingly outmatched both in terms of aircraft and air defenses. Few Iraqi Air Force jets even joined the fight. The antiquated Soviet air defense system was disorganized and ineptly operated.
Even so, in the six weeks of the campaign, the US lost almost 30 aircraft to enemy fire, including the following:

1 F/A-18C was shot down in a dog fight with some hot shot Iraqi pilot flying a MiG-25.

The 1960s-era S-75 system shot down:
1 A-6E
1 F-15E
1 F-14A

The 1960s-era S-125:
1 F-16C

AAA:
1 F-15E
2 A-6E
1 F-4G Wild Weasel

The 1950s-era Kub mobile system:
1 F-16C

The 1970s-era Strela mobile system:
3 A-10A

MANPADS:
4 AV-8B
1 A-10A
1 F-16C
Iran, here in 2024, has a FAR more capable air defense system than did Iraq in 1991.
I wonder how the American public would react today if the US lost 100+ aircraft over a six week period in a war against Iran.
