In 1389 was fought the great battle of Kosovo Polje, or the Field of Blackbirds, a large plain in Old Serbia, at the southern end of which is Skoplje. At this battle Serbian armies from all the Serb lands, including Bosnia, joined together in defence of their country for the last time. The issue of the battle was for some time in doubt, but was decided by the treachery and flight at the critical moment of one of the Serb leaders, Vuk Brankovi['c], son-in-law of Prince Lazar, with a large number of troops. Another dramatic incident was the murder of Sultan Murad in his tent by another Serbian leader, Milo[)s] Obili['c], who, accused of treachery by his own countrymen, vowed he would prove his good faith, went over to the Turks and, pretending to be a traitor, gained admission to the Sultan's presence and proved his patriotism by killing him. The momentary dismay was put an end to by the energetic conduct of Bayezid, son of Murad, who rallied the Turkish troops and ultimately inflicted total defeat on the Serbians. From the effects of this battle Serbia never recovered; Prince Lazar was captured and executed; his wife, Princess Milica, had to give her daughter to Bayezid in marriage, whose son thus ultimately claimed possession of Serbia by right of inheritance.

Princess Milica and her son Stephen continued to live at Kru[)s]evac, but Serbia was already a tributary of Turkey.
In the north, Hungary profited by the course of events and occupied Belgrade and all northern Serbia, but in 1396 the Turks defeated the Magyars severely at the battle of Nikopolis, on the Danube, making the Serbs under Stephen fight on the Turkish side.
Stephen also had to help Sultan Bajazet against the Tartars, and fought at the battle of Angora, in 1402, when Tamerlane captured Bayezid.

The Battle of Angora,
Friday, July 28, 1402 AD

By Vincent Tsao (алијас анте павелиќ)

The Ottomans deployed with Anatolian troops on the left, under Bayezit's son Sulieman. The center had Janissaries under the Sultan, and elite Sipahis under another son, Mohammed. The right included 20,000 armored Serbian knights under Bayezit's brother-in-law Stephan Lazarevitch, Despot of Serbia. The Mongols formed in three divisions and a reserve, under the aging Tamerlaine's personal command.

The Turks marched to attack. The Serbs rode down the light horse archers before them and crashed into the Mongol cavalry. The Mongols gave ground, some taking to their heels. On the Turkish left, their leading Tartar light horse changed sides and enveloped the Turkish left. They were displeased with the Sultan's tax policies, and Tamerlaine's agents had promised large bonuses. The Mongol cavalry on the right charged, and combined with the flank pressure of the turncoat Tartars broke Sulieman's wing. The Serbs lost heart when they saw the Anatolians fleeing, and left the field. Bayezit was left with his Janissaries and reserve Sipahis, fighting bravely against the Mongol tide. The Sultan slew many with his axe. In time, the cavalry fled, and Janissaries began drifting away.

When only 300 remained standing, Bayezit turned and fled. But the Mongol horse archers were too swift for him. He was led in chains to Tamerlaine's tent. Some 15,000 of his troops lay dead on the field.

Tamerlaine treated Bayezit with respect at first, but soon took to carrying him in a cage and using him as a foot stool. Bayezit's Serbian wife Despina was forced to serve at Tamerlaine's table naked. After eight months of such treatment, Bayezit had a stroke, and died a few days later in March of 1403.

...

Anaveno, you are wrong. Such folk-tales are probably common for the many parts of Europe. Last month I was in Estonia and heard they also have such legends - in times of famine, in the winter, the Eesti would leave their old parents in the woods. To die of hunger, not to kill them. There is a similar Bulgarian folk-tale. - The adult sons in a kingdom kill their fathers during famine, save for one son, whose father later saves the whole family by telling his son to dig up the anthills for grain, stored by the ants.

And now eat the humble pie - there are similar folk-tales from Macedonia as well:

"Za klanjeto na starite"

Kazhveet, otu na staro vreme starite i nekadrite ljuge 'i kolele. Ednozh vo eden grad doshol nekoj nov zabit. Starite starci oshle go prechekale i go pochestile i sekoga mu odele pei nego i sedele na mezlichot. ...

This folk-tale is from Ohrid and was published by Kuzman Shapkarev in 1892, "slushana ot pokojnago mi tatka prez 1855-1861 godina":

Enought genealogical details, no?

Anaveno, I was careful to avoid any national(istic) labels and any 'Slavic' origins, just the "common for the many parts of Europe"-observation. I am sure some ethnologist in Europe has investigated the custom. In fact, a quick search in google now reveled that the killing the old parents in times of hunger was a legend/(custom?) found in Europe, Turkey, India and China, Mexico, etc.
