Here's what i think about Roma .
Roma won't realize their ambitions unless Roma questions what Roma believe for themselves. Roma does not need to be rebuilt again . Roma has been rebuilt ever since the previous owners left , this half of the season was simply a setback , something that will always happen to every club everywhere and forever. Roma does indeed love their drama , though. Can't recall one season without some Roma drama in it , always the romantics like McLewis says.
It's always 'something missing' with Roma . Always something which prevents them from making that final step and rip the rewards in the end . Be it the coach , be it depth , be it the previous spent management or simply the fairly new and inexperienced one's ambiguous calls , or simply bad transfers that do not fall under the standards of their ambitious project . And of course , always been like this , the immense pressure of the fan base , putting a heavy burden to everyone , from management to the youngest player , to instantly be more than they have achieved . There's a reason why Totti is revered as a deity within the Roma culture , Fransesco realized the desires of the most wild of Romanisti . But even a legendary player like Totti can't change the identity and mentality that plagues Roma .
Roma has to change . And when i say change i mean evolve . And when i say evolve i don't mean to think and dream bigger and of grandeur . Because that's what the real Roma does , that's what the players do and that's what their hierarchy does and that's what their fan base does as well , either in the open or in secret . Their mentality is above it , but that's what burns them all inside. They need to start thinking pragmatically and realistically . Thinking big and dreaming big do not happen by starting with actively acting like you're there already and rapture to everyone who fails to meet these expectations . It's when your perception and actions are based on the ground , that's when one takes fly. Nobody begun flying from the skies . And here's the root of it all , that's where the Romanisti minds reside , in the skies. And that's why every setback they suffer is always dramatized .
Roma need to and are trying to and haven been right to do so , change their identity . They actually have to take a look in the mirror and embrace the fact that , if they want to establish themselves where they deserve to be , they must develop a change in culture , mentality and identity .
Roma may not have won as much as the other big 3 in Italy and they certainly have lost their , quoting the [strike]Quaresma[/strike] CR7 of directors Galliani , CL dna , but they do remain a huge club nevertheless . And when you are a huge club , traits like playing for the shirt and playing good football are simply put , mandatory . It means little to nothing except for themselves when they think like that . You can't just say such things and then come to complain about this Scudetto lost , or that Scudetto lost . Realistic fans either complain about the one or the other , never both . Simply because when one is there , the other usually follows . And i say usually because sometimes , actually more often than not , you don't win even when you're really good. Roma's culture is like , we must always be like this and start winning . But when they don't win , even if their team is competitive and beautiful to watch , they need heads to roll to be satisfied . From where exactly does that insane pressure stems from , i wonder .
You want to see the difference ? Maldini said once , after Milan had won the Champions League in 2006-2007 , that despite going all the way and winning the Champions League , they looked at themselves and agreed they didn't feel like the best in the world . Let that sink in please.
Now check at Roma . They have had a fantastic team in recent years . And they faced certain teams that actually were of the best in the world at the time , Bayern and Barcelona . And we all remember what happened. Do you know why that happened? Exactly because they thought themselves equals to the best in the world . Even when they have never been on their level , bar Totti and De Rossi who have been world class players and actually get what it takes to get there. In the past the same with Manchester United.
And do you know why they thought like this and kept thinking like this? Because of their culture. That culture which on one hand genuinely is above titles , and on the other demands Roma to win silverware in spite of the aforementioned , and oblivion to anyone who fails . There's such an unhealthy and fatal contradiction in there , which simply doesn't let Roma to take that final step . Fans and management and players alike realized they are not even close to that , once more , let alone think or dream of grandeur . Their perception of themselves , their very culture was severely attacked once more and they are in shambles ever since . Hopefully , Spalletti gets them there, since him actually understands Roma better than any elite coach .
One either wants to be the first in the village , or accept he can only be equal among equals in the city . Roma's culture is the first , their mentality is the second. And what Roma's identity looks like as a result ?? A forever romantic and hardcore club always in contradiction with themselves , simply because even when they were the first in the village , they were never satisfied anyway , since their mentality isn't aligned with their culture. And when they fail to be equal among equals in the city, then their first in the village culture wave-slaps them all in the face , not realizing that you have to get there once , to be able to act and think and hold yourself like an equal .
Rinse and repeat every now and then by Roma.
So what Roma should do , to emerge better and stronger this time ? Stop with the insane beliefs of grandeur , because it has been a while since they've won and practice more the pragmatic side of things. Believe in Spalletti who understands Roma better than any 'elite coach' , put support forward before expectations and let time be the judge . This Roma will become bigger than the Roma we knew , only once their culture adapts to the reality and becomes something new , from the last fan to the President . And i fully believe Spalletti as the man who can help Roma toward that path , since he will concern himself more with the football and sporting side of things than with arbitrary expectations and won't be affected by the negative side of the Roma world . He comes to make one more Spalletti's Roma , under a much more competitive management .
Give it some time and even if it's not him on the bench by that time , Roma will be winning again and hopefully the entire Roma world comes to realize by then , to understand their biggest flaw ; their identity is what needs to change and in part , them , at least the hardcore fans . And for that to happen , they need to have both their beliefs about who and what they are and their expectations aligned . You can't say we're above titles and moan when you don't win titles. You can't say we want Roma to always play great football and bitch about not winning titles regardless .
When Roma actually starts winning eventually , they will look into the past and realize it immediately . It was them all along , them that made it difficult for themselves . And only them . Staying the same old same old and expecting better results season after season is the definition of delusion . They either admit they need to evolve their identity and change it and move on free from the usual shackles , or stop complaining about failing to become elite or what's called these days . Football lore like play for the shirt and all that exist literally everywhere , it's mandatory and it's redundant to point .
You either are above titles with the outmost pride and simply stop with the insane pressure they put on their club year after year , or accept the fact that it's the very same identity Roma is fighting to improve upon and that's the very reason this pressure exists , because the Roma identity wasn't enough and it needs to change and evolve , it needs to be more than great to watch finished 2nd last season. Expecting to be more without changing themselves , same old same old like always but expecting better every next seaosn is insane and the real shackles that keep them from climbing that last step.
Is that really a bad thing? Not if you ask me , not when Roma themselves want to become more. And they will probably achieve it if they start being pragmatists and think less of grandeur and romance , and more of the pitch and reality and what best can be done now . Actually stop investing in fodder players and the like will probably get you very far , you were almost there anyway , and Spalletti , a coach i really respect , is one of the right people to lead Roma toward that path .
