Moratti: "No one deserves this situation"

MILAN - Massimo Moratti was interviewed beneath his Milan residence late this afternoon.
Here's what the Inter president had to say:
President, were you expecting this earthquake, with this shock announcement from Mancini?
"No. It was surprising. Of course I wasn't expecting it, and neither were those who are close to him."
What's your explanation for all this? Did you have the feeling something like this would happen?
"No, not at all. There will be reasons for it. I think it's probably something he had in mind since the game in Liverpool because it's strange to come out with something like this all of a sudden. I honestly can't find an explanation for it right now."
Can we exclude the possibility of him being sacked?
"I still have to talk to him about it. We spoke briefly last night, but now we need to see what we really want, so there will be a meeting, probably tomorrow morning or in any case during the day, because it was better for each one of us to clear our heads after the match. We will see what happens after, but I hope things are cleared up."
Are you a bit disappointed?
"No. Things like this can happen. Nothing in football surprises me anymore."
What are you thinking of doing?
"I will meet him and then we will make decisions."
And what if Mancini confirmed his will to leave Inter at the end of the season? Do you have in mind any possible alternatives?
"No. It wouldn't be fair towards him.
I already said last night that I'm not thinking of changing. There's a contract. There's faith in him. We need to see if he has faith in himself."
Is it true that there were some disagreements between yourself and Mancini in the changing room after Liverpool-Inter, regarding his decision not to play Luis Figo?
"I have never done anything like this. I didn't do it last night and I never will."
With Roma six points behind and eleven matches of the season remaining, is there the risk of this incident destabilising the environment?
"I don't know. The team, the club, he himself and the fans don't deserve a situation that could destabilise the environment. So let's stay strong and do well."
Are you disappointed by the team's defeatist attitude against Liverpool?
"The team played last night and had two or three clear scoring chances. It was a game that could have ended positively. All that was needed was a goal. We have been condemned by the constant dismissals this year. However, I don't know how the match would have ended if Ibrahimovic had scored from that clear chance, so I can't say anything against the team or against anyone."
Are you even more surprised at Mancini's comments when you look at the two matches against Liverpool, which both finished with your team down to ten men?
"I believe he really wanted to do well in the Champions Cup. Perhaps he made this decision because he was disappointed about this result, but I don't think it's this simple. Giving this interpretation would make the situation worse."
But Mancini said he would have said the same thing even if he had won...
"Maybe. This is the reason why we will meet. It might have been a heroic decision. We will see tomorrow."
