In my view sapphire and acrylic (plexi) are the two best choices, with mineral crystal being the lesser of the 3.
As you say, sapphire is hard, and is very scratch resistant. The scratch on the crystal of my PAM 104 would tell you for sure that it's not scratch proof though. I am trying for the first time to actually buff a sapphire crystal out, and I have several different grades of diamond paste. It's a long, slow process that I really don't have time for, so it's only partially complete. However unless I want to send my watch to Richemont to have them replace the crystal, and they will insist on a full movement service at the same time, I have no choice but take the long and slow route.
I've already serviced the modified 7750 in my watch, so I don't need them messing up my work, and me paying for them to mess it up! :banghead:
Acrylic crystals do have a warmer feeling, and are not scrtach resistant, but definitely impact resistant. It's amazing what can be buffed out of these. For heavily damaged acrylic crystals, I start with a very fine wet/dry sandpaper - 1200 grit. Then I move to 3200, and then straight to Polywatch. I can get very good results this way, even on badly scratched crystals. Over time though acrylic can degrade somewhat, and you will see crazing in the crystal - like small stress fractures. It can also yellow a bit, which is why I replace quite a few of these.
Mineral crystals are easily scratched, and have no real great impact resistance. They lack the benefits of both acrylic and sapphire in my view. Yes they are a bit better at not getting scratcheed than acrylic, but they do shatter. Thier only benefit is that they are cheap to buy - cheaper than sapphire for sure, and usually cheaper than acrylic.
