Blog: The new favourites
After their triumph against Inter, are Roma now the new favourites for the Scudetto, asks Susy Campanale?
Inter were not so much the favourites for the title since pre-season, more of a foregone conclusion. That has been the case every year since Calciopoli and this term showed no sign of changing that when they drafted in Wesley Sneijder and Diego Milito. This weekend, for the first time in four years, that may well no longer be the case.
It’s true that the Nerazzurri still lead the table by a point, but this is like going into the final 15 minutes of a game. If we were to ask which side had the wind in its sails, that would undoubtedly be Roma. Their Serie A unbeaten streak now stretches to 21, Luca Toni is playing and scoring consistently, while even Jeremy Menez seems to have remembered he is a professional footballer.
More importantly than anything else, Francesco Totti is on his way back for the final push. The fact Roma have been able to close up the gap in the six weeks without their captain is a testament to how well this side has done. There were already glimpses upon his return for five minutes against Inter of what he can do when combining with Toni, the dream team Giallorossi fans have been unable to experience due to injuries for one or the other.
The run-in would also favour Roma, who on paper have the simplest task in the remaining few rounds. They face trips to Bari, Parma and Chievo, with Atalanta, Sampdoria and Cagliari at the Olimpico. There is also the Rome derby against a Lazio side that is beginning to find its stride after a disastrous run, but remains fragile.
Inter welcome Bologna, Juventus, Atalanta and Chievo along with trips to Fiorentina, Lazio and Siena. That’s not to mention, of course, the fact they must also play the Champions League quarter-final against CSKA Moscow and – hopefully – the semi-final and Final too. It’s no secret that is their primary objective for the campaign and subconsciously they could focus more energy towards the continental goal.
This all makes for a fascinating end to the Serie A season and it’s easy to see why Roma fans are feeling optimistic.
според Газета имало пенал врз Бриги и Ќиву заслужи црвен, самиот Колина бил присутен на мечот и нормално нему не му треба репетиција да ги свати грешките на Морганти и неговите помошници... тоа е јбг
Director of referees Pierluigi Collina was in the stands, and he won't have needed the replay on his personal display in order to understand the errors made by Lanciano and by referee Morganti, who cautioned Brighi for diving when in fact Julio Cesar made contact with his foot - it should have been a penalty. He also failed to send off Chivu for what appeared to be a deliberate stamp on Toni's thigh. But Luca has shrugged off the mark, seeing as there's a title to be won, and it would be his first. And now if Roma and Inter should end the season tied on points the Giallorossi have the advantage in head-to-head meetings: they could yet steal the title from the Nerazzurri's grasp
