„When I saw Martin Keown, like climbing on the top of the head, of Ruud Van Nistelrooy, I was wondering myself: "Did he want to eat him"? - Robert Pires, after Ruud missed the penalty, and helped Arsenal to stay unbeatten, all season and won the Premier League title.
И уште „нешто“...
Sir Alex Ferguson, legendary Arsenal manager. But for the impatience of the Arsenal board in 1986, those words could well have been true today, after it emerged that the famous Scottish boss was offered the London job while on duty with Scotland during the Mexico World Cup.
The secret was shared by Ferguson’s old Aberdeen goalkeeper Jim Leighton, who was on Scotland duty with the stand-in manager when the Highbury big-wigs got in touch.
Leighton revealed that although Ferguson was interested, he didn’t want to discuss the prospect while he was leading his country in place of Jock Stein, who had died on the touch line just months earlier.
"Ferguson was offered the Arsenal job," said Leighton. "George Graham would have been his assistant, but he wanted to wait until the World Cup was finished before it was getting announced.
"Arsenal said they wanted it [a decision] straight away and so he refused it and George Graham got the job.
"He wanted to announce it when he got back to Aberdeen, to do it the right way."
Arsenal’s loss, Manchester United’s gain. Not that Graham was a bad choice. In nine years in charge he won the league twice, an FA Cup, two league cups, the Uefa Cup Winners’ Cup and a Charity Shield.
