OK so as it currently stands, here’s how Italy’s European picture is looking:
Champions League:
All 4 teams go straight to the group stage.
1. Juventus
2. Inter
3. Atalanta
4. Lazio
Europa League:
All 3 teams are in the Europa league but their position determines everything.
5. Roma
6. Milan
7. Napoli
If Milan tie with Roma on points, Milan finish ahead via h2h record.
Napoli automatically qualify to the group stage for winning the Coppa Italia along with the 5th place team.
The 6th place team, as it stands, will go to the preliminary phase of Europa League.
If Napoli end up finishing top 6, then the 7th place team will go through to the preliminary rounds of Europa League, and Napoli + the other top 6 team will advance straight to the group stage.
HERE’S WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING:
IF NAPOLI win the Champions League, they will then be automatically qualified for the UCL next season, leaving an additional spot open for an Italian team in the Europa League.
IF ROMA win the Europa League, they too will also get a place in next years Champions League, leaving an additional Italian spot open in the EL.
NOW HERE’S THE CRAZIEST PART OF IT ALL:
IF NAPOLI AND ROMA both win the UCL and EL respectively, then they will both qualify for the Champions League next season. BUTTT here’s the kicker, UEFA only allow a maximum of 5 clubs from any one country in the UCL, SO the top 3 teams in Italy will advance to next years UCL + Roma & Napoli, while the 4th place team would be removed from UCL and be sent to EL.
The odds of this happening are slim, but could you imagine the scenes in Italy?
