Max Allegri took the blame for the poor Juventus performance against Lazio,
even though they won 2-1. “I put Emre Can in a difficult position.”
Bianconeri were pinned back for an hour and went behind through an Emre Can own goal, but Joao Cancelo came off the bench and changed the game with an equaliser and earning the Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.
“We didn’t do well for the first hour, but the last half-hour I think did better. At half-time, I told the lads to pass it more cleanly, not make so many hasty mistakes,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“The introduction of Federico Bernardeschi and Cancelo made us more organised. It was a difficult match, but I’ve been at Juventus for five years and have never had an easy ride at the Olimpico against Lazio, so it wasn’t a surprise.
“It’s my responsibility, as I tried to play with Emre Can in front of the defence and that was a mistake. He doesn’t have the right timing yet, so I put him in a very difficult position. I put Bentancur there instead and it went better.
“Those who come off the bench are essential.
I was sad to leave Bernardeschi out initially, but we have a big game coming up against Atalanta in the Coppa Italia on Wednesday.
“The Lazio pressing game caused us problems, especially because our own passing was so misplaced. It felt like we were all wearing different jerseys in the first half, because we couldn’t pass to a teammate. We adjusted some things and were more orderly, so finished the game on a high.
“We knew it was important to win after Napoli drew with Milan. I told the lads a win would be a step forward, even if we didn’t play that well.”
Giorgio Chiellini said Wojciech Szczesny “kept us afloat for an hour” and Allegri agreed.
“Szczesny is doing very well, but we knew he was a great goalkeeper. I think the biggest leap forward he has made is in his focus over 90 minutes and confidence.
“Leonardo Bonucci’s ankle is swollen, so we’ll see, but we’ve got Martin Caceres coming in. Miralem Pjanic will be back midweek.”[DOUBLEPOST=1548630407][/DOUBLEPOST]
RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS
- I’m sure Leonardo Bonucci getting injured will have those who are worried about Juve’s depth and center back with Medhi Benatia leaving.
- That run Bernardeschi made that led to Cancelo’s game-tying goal. Yowza. What a beauty.
- The ability to place that shot far post from Cancelo on his first touch. Yowza. What a beauty.
- Just for the record, that’s a penalty every single time no matter the team it benefits. Cancelo beat his man and clearly got hauled down in the box. If VAR had reversed that call then you would have gotten the first 800 words of this post in all caps.
- There seems to be two very different ways to look at the game that Daniele Rugani had. There are those who are choosing to look at a couple of the mistakes he made and then use it as fuel in their argument that he’s not a capable replacement for Bonucci if he’s out for a chunk of time. There are others, like myself, who see the nine clearances he made and the important plays he was involved in to
- The more playing time he gets, the better Bernardeschi gets. It’s science — and just like in August and September, this version of Fede is the one that’s at his best.
- Wojciech Szczesny was as busy as he’s been in a Juventus jersey on Sunday. And he answered the call every single time. There was nothing he could do on Emre Can’s own goal, and was probably the biggest reason as to why the game was scoreless at halftime. Not all of his five saves were tough ones, but there were a couple of them that were really, really good — especially the one right before halftime.
- Based on how that game played out, I still have no idea how Juventus finished with more possession than Lazio.
- We’re going to have to go back into the archives and find a game where Douglas Costa played 70 minutes, touched the ball 54 times and done just about nothing of note. For as huge of an impact he’s made in the last couple of weeks, this game was not like those games.
- Joao Cancelo, though, man. What a freaking signing he has been.
- This game, man. Go ahead and show somebody the first half and ask them what the final score will be. If it’s a 2-1 Juventus win where a Lazio player doesn’t actually score a goal, then you’d probably laugh in their face. And yet...
