Few players have won the hearts of Juventus supporters like Gigi Buffon. The goalkeeper has not only delivered sterling performances since his arrival from Parma in 2001, but he has shown a loyalty to the club that few could match.
When Juventus were relegated following Calciopoli in 2006, Buffon, having won the World Cup just a few weeks earlier, declared that he would follow the side into Serie B. As Juventus travelled the dusty provincial pitches of Italy’s Second Division, Buffon’s presence was one of the many draws, filling the otherwise often half-empty stadiums of Crotone and Mantova with supporters.
Nowadays Juve’s finances are not what they were and this is a problem for an ambitious club. Supporters want to see the Bianconeri restored to the top of the Italian game, but fail to appreciate the money such ambitions require. Although parsimony can encourage important new long-term strategic directions, such as investing in youth players like Sebastian Giovinco and Claudio Marchisio, today’s football demands more.
The reported €70m that City would offer for Buffon could go a long way towards realising those aspirations. Juventus could buy players such as Xabi Alonso, Antonio Cassano and a strong central defender to play alongside Giorgio Chiellini.
Obviously the question would then become who would replace Gigi? While there are few established ‘keepers who could match Buffon’s skill, there are some promising talents that might be worth the gamble, such as Palermo’s Marco Amelia, Sampdoria’s Vincenzo Fiorillo or their own Antonio Mirante.
And Juventus are not averse to risks. Back in 1992, they benched long-time shot-stopper Stefano Tacconi for a promising young man called Angelo Peruzzi. Buffon himself came to Turin [along with Pavel Nedved and Lillian Thuram] following Juve’s sale of Zinedine Zidane to Real Madrid, a transfer that at the time enraged and anguished Bianconeri supporters.
As hard as it is for fans to remember, no one player is greater than the outfit he plays for. Names come and go but the club must endure. And if by moving to Manchester City Buffon could give Juventus the resources necessary to reclaim the Scudetto and Champions League, he will have made one last great save for the Bianconeri.[/FONT]
