Neo-nazi skinheads

The skinhead phenomenon originated in the early 1970s, when groups of menacing-looking, shaved-head, tattooed youths in combat boots appeared on the streets of England. For some, the racist and chauvinistic attitudes held by these gangs developed into a crude form of Nazism with a penchant for violence, exemplified by frequent, racially motivated attacks on Asian immigrants ("Paki-bashing") and homosexuals ("fag-bashing").
In the years that followed, the Skinhead movement spread from England to the Continent and beyond. Racist Skinheads are found today in almost every industrialized country whose majority population is of European stock, though not all Skinheads are racists. Skinheads are almost uniformly white youths in their teens and twenties, who respond to the movement's seductive sense of strength, group belonging and superiority over others.
Generally, neo-Nazi Skinheads' views have varied. Some believe in orthodox Nazi ideology, while others adhere to a mixture of racism, populism, ethnocentrism and ultranationalist chauvinism, along with a hodgepodge of Nazi-like attitudes.

PERSECUTED BY MANY,UNDRESTOOD BY FEW.

White power skinhead

White power skinheads or Nazi skinheads are a far right subculture that developed in the United Kingdom around the late 1970s.[citation needed]
Typically racist, anti-Semitic, anti-islamic, white supremacist, anti-gay and often neo-Nazi, the subculture emerged at a time when the UK was experiencing a second wave of the punk subculture. White power skinheads have a reputation for initiating violent confrontations with non-whites, Muslims, Jews, gays and left-wingers on the street and at political demonstrations. They are sometimes involved in white nationalist political organizations, such as the People's National Party (Russia), the National Democratic Party of Germany, the British National Front and the National Socialist Movement of Denmark. Nazi Skinheads are usually called boneheads by members of the punk and non-racist skinhead subcultures, both as a derogatory term and to avoid confusion between the racist and non-racist skinheads when referring to either.

History

The original skinhead subculture started in the late 1960s, and had heavy British mod and Jamaican rude boy influences — including their love for ska and soul music.[1][2][3] [4] The identity of the original skinheads was neither white power nor neo-Nazi, and instead skinheads mostly opposed other youth subcultures of the day. Skinheads were working-class, usually patriotic, and highly aggressive. The main targets were long-haired hippies who were often from more privileged backgrounds. However, some skinheads (including black skinheads) had engaged in Paki bashing (random violence against Pakistanis and other South Asian immigrants).[5] [6]
The original skinhead scene had mostly died out by 1972, and a late-1970s revival came partly as a backlash against the commercialization of punk rock; coinciding with the development of the 2 Tone and Oi! genres.[7][8][9][10][11] The skinhead revival in Britain included a sizeable racist, nationalist faction, involving organizations such as the National Front, British Movement, Rock Against Communism and Blood and Honour. Because of their emergence to prevalence in the subculture, the mainstream media began to label the whole skinhead identity as neo-Nazi.
The racist subculture eventually spread to North America, Europe and other areas of the world. After the movement spread to the United States, some racist skinheads in that country became involved with groups such as Church of the Creator, White Aryan Resistance and the Hammerskins (a group that then spread to other countries). According to a 2007 report by the Anti-Defamation League, groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, Nazi skinheads and other Nazis have been growing more active in the United States in recent years, with a particular focus on opposing non-white immigration, specifically from Mexico.[12]
Nazi skinheads have become numerous in formerly communist Eastern European countries, in particular Russia, which is perhaps a reaction to decades of communist totalitarianism. The Russian newspaper Mosnews estimated in 2005 that there were up to 50,000 Nazi skinheads in Russia involved in groups such as the National Bolsheviks and the Patriotic movement. This is almost the same figure as the estimate of up to 70,000 for the rest of the world.[13]

Style and clothing

In contrast to the mod-influenced traditional skinheads, Nazi skinheads tend to wear higher boots, T-shirts instead of button-up shirts, and army trousers or jeans. They usually crop their hair shorter than the 1960s-style skinheads; often to grade 0 length or shaved off completely with a razor. Nazi skinheads generally have more tattoos than traditional skinheads, and these tattoos are usually of explicitly racist content. In contrast to other skinheads, many Nazi skinheads do not wear braces, and some wear chains and rings featuring Nazi or white power emblems. Some Nazi skinheads do not have entirely shaved heads but rather have a punk-style haircut, however these individuals identify themselves as skinheads on account of their racist inclinations. In Germany, the Lonsdale clothing brand has been popular among some Nazi skinheads. This is because the four middle letters of Lonsdale, NSDA, are almost the same as the abbreviation of Adolf Hitler's political party, the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP).[14]

Hammerskins

The Hammerskins, (also known as Hammerskin Nation) is a white supremacist group formed in 1988 in Dallas, Texas.
The Hammerskins' primary focus is the production and promotion of white power music (also known as Rock Against Communism) and many white power bands are affiliated with the group. The Hammerskins are affiliated with the record label Free Your Mind Productions, and Ku Klux Klan. The Hammerskins idealize who they think are historical warriors such as the Aryan race, Vikings and Nazis. Many of its members have been convicted of harassing, assaulting and even murdering non-whites. The Hammerskins were at one time considered the United States' most well-organized racist skinhead group. Power struggles have split the group into several factions, some of which are now defunct. In addition to the United States, Hammerskins chapters have existed in: Canada, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary, Portugal, Spain, New Zealand and Australia.
The Hammerskins logo, depicting two claw hammers crossed to resemble goose-stepping legs, is copied from a fictitious neo-fascist organization depicted in the 1982 film Pink Floyd The Wall. However, Pink Floyd has no connection to the Hammerskins, and the fictional group in the film was intended to satirize fascism. The Hammerskins logo and their motto Hammerskins Forever, Forever Hammerskins (HFFH) often appear in their paraphernalia and tattoos.

Neo-Nazism

Neo-Nazism (literally new Nazism) is the ideology of post-World War II political movements seeking to revive Nazism.
The specific policies of neo-Nazi groups differ, but they often include allegiance to Adolf Hitler, anti-Semitism, racism, xenophobia (towards non-whites), nationalism, white supremacy, militarism and homophobia. Neo-Nazis often use the symbols of Nazi Germany, such as the Swastika, Sig Runes, and the red-white-black color scheme. Some groups and individuals who support the ideology openly declare themselves as Nazis or neo-Nazis, but others eschew those terms to avoid social stigma or legal consequences. Some European countries have laws prohibiting the expression of pro-Nazi, racist or anti-Semitic views; thus no significant political party describes itself as neo-Nazi in those countries. Neo-Nazi activity appears to be a global phenomenon, with organized representation in many countries, as well as international networks. Individuals who have attempted to revive Nazism include Colin Jordan, George Lincoln Rockwell, Savitri Devi, Francis Parker Yockey, William Pierce, Eddy Morrison, and David Myatt.

Red and Anarchist Skinheads

Red and Anarchist Skinheads (RASH) is a left-wing anti-racist, anti-fascist skinhead group.
Logo of Red and Anarchist Skinheads (RASH), originally New York City

RASH includes redskins and anarchist skinheads. It was officially launched on January 1, 1993 by members of the Mayday Crew, a left-wing skinhead and punk group based in the New York City area. The Mayday Crew was formed due to in-fighting between members of New York City's Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice chapter, over the murder of a homosexual man by anti-racist, yet right-wing, skinheads.
Shortly after the initial call went out for the formation of a network, chapters formed in other countries around the world, mostly from existing left-wing skinhead crews

Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice

Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice (SHARP) are anti-racist skinheads who oppose neo-Nazis and other political racists, especially if those racists call themselves skinheads.
SHARPs recognize the biracial origins of the skinhead subculture, and resent what they see as the hijacking of the skinhead name by racist extremists. Beyond the issue of anti-racism, there is no official political ideology of SHARP. However, some SHARPs have similar beliefs to politically-minded anti-fascist skinheads such as redskins and anarchists (such as those in the group Red and Anarchist Skinheads). Due to their anti-racist ideals, some SHARPs have been involved with groups such as Anti-Fascist Action or Anti-Racist Action. However, this is more based on personal beliefs, instead of directly associated with SHARP. In the 2000s, SHARP has become more of an individual designation than an official organization.

Before SHARP

The original skinhead subculture started in the United Kingdom in late 1960s, and had heavy British mod and Jamaican rude boy influences, including a love for ska and soul music.[1][2][3] [4] Although some skinheads (including black skinheads) had engaged in Paki bashing (random violence against Pakistanis and other South Asian immigrants), skinheads were not associated with an organized racist political movement in the 1960s.[5] [6] [7] However, in the late 1970s, a skinhead revival in the UK included a sizeable white nationalist faction, involving organizations such as the National Front, British Movement, Rock Against Communism and Blood and Honour. Because of this, the mainstream media began to label the whole skinhead identity as neo-Nazi. This new white power and Nazi skinhead movement then spread to other countries, including the United States.

Gay skinhead

A Gay skinhead, also known as a gayskin or queerskin, is a gay person who identifies with the skinhead subculture, often (though not necessarily) out of sexual interest.
Some gay skinheads have a sexual fetish for skinhead clothing styles; others have a violence fetish. Some are simply attracted to skinheads' outward displays of masculinity. What they all have in common, is that they adopt skinhead subcultural aspects and are sexually attracted to others who do the same. There are skinheads who happen to be gay, but who do not fetishize the skinhead image. These individuals may prefer not to be referred to as gayskins because of the sexual connotations — and they may not associate with self-identified gayskins for the same reason. Gay skinheads figure in the work of gay artists such as Canadian painter Attila Richard Lukacs and filmmaker Bruce LaBruce. Gay skinheads have been featured on the catwalks of fashion designers Alexander McQueen and Jean-Paul Gaultier since the early 1990s.

Background/History This symbol is one of the older, more traditional skinhead symbols. Both neo-Nazi and anti-racist skinheads use the symbol to symbolize the plight of the working class. They also have used it as a threatening message to one another. SHARPs (SkinHeads Against Racial Prejudice) have distributed literature containing the symbol in order to express the difficulties they confront when they are confused with neo-Nazi skinheads. In some cases, when used as a tattoo, it can also signify that an individual has either served time in prison or committed a murder.

Skinhead Symbol
Symbol Description Three "sevens" (or "curved" sevens) spiraling from a common center.
Also Known As Triskelion, Three-Bladed Swastika, "Flowering Power"
Traditional Use/Origins The triskele is an ancient symbol used widely in pre-Christian Europe. One version of the triskele, with three human legs, has been used in the coat of arms for the Isle of Man and the Kingdom of Naples. An abstracted triskele appears on the seal of the United States Department of Transportation. The version of the triskele that looks like three linked sevens has a high degree of association with white supremacy, but other versions do not and are most often used in a non-racist context. They may frequently be seen in Celtic jewelry, artwork, and in other similar contexts.
Hate Group/Extremist Organization Neo-Nazis, racist skinheads (especially those associated with the group Blood & Honour); AWB Afrikaner Resistance
Extremist Meaning or Representation White supremacy; association with the swastika and Nazi Germany.
Background/History Essentially a variation on the swastika, and popular for that reason, the triskele was a symbol occasionally used by the Nazi regime, most notably as the insignia for a Waffen SS division composed of Belgian volunteers. After World War II, the "Three Sevens" version of the triskele was popularized by white supremacists in Europe and South Africa. One South African group, the AWB (Afrikaner Resistance Movement), used it as its flag, claiming that the three sevens symbolized supremacy over the devil (frequently represented by "666"). The symbol is also used as part of the logo of the international racist skinhead group, Blood & Honour.
