settings>>general>>accessibility>>hearing >>turn on MONO AUDIO
I have an iPad 3 and also had no sound out of the blue. I tried every way I could but without any luck until I randomly started looking at my iCloud setting for no good reason, then the clicking sound from keyboard suddenly came out of the speaker. It was very strange and didn't make any sense but somehow it triggered the sound to come back.
What I exactly did was I went in settings > iCloud > storage & backup > your device > show all apps.
I went into "Music" under settings and turned on "Sound Check." Then I went back to my music app and pressed play. The iPad seemed to be doing some sort of recalibration, and then the sound started working again. So bizarre.
I took a wooden toothpick and carefully cleaned the headphone jack and the connector at the bottom. Voilá, sound is back.
Nothing clears it except when I go to settings/general//accessibility and move the left to right balance control which restores my sound.
I had exactly the same problem. The problem is that the on/off button also switches off the sound. Press on/off on side of iPad will switch on the sound, but of course this switches off your iPad too! So, you press it again to switch iPad back on and it switches the sound off again !! Doh! a catch-22
So how do you press this button without switching off your iPad ?
THIS IS HOW TO FIX:
Press and hold the on/off button (on the side of iPad) and then press the "HOME" (round button on the front of the ipad) at the same time. This will take a screenshot AND switch the sound back on at the same time.
