The arena Boris Trajkovski was shaking in their fundaments again – and again was a perfect set-up for another historic Macedonian handball classic. After Metalurg had beaten Vardar in this venue and Vardar had tied with Barcelona, now the big Catalans again stumbled in Skopje.
After a series of eight straight wins, the record winner of the EHF Champions League were defeated for the first time in this season – and the arena in Skopje went crazy after the final whistle.
Metalurg’s heroes were goalkeeper Nikola Mitrevski and Goce Georgievski, who netted in six times, including the decisive last goal for 31:29 in the dying seconds of a finally thrilling match, most of the time dominated by Metalurg.
Thanks to their brilliant defence and Stanic, the hosts were away all the time and sensationally conceded only eleven goals by the Catalan goal machine in the first half.
And even more surprisingly, they stood the pressure, Barca put on them after the break. The distance was four to five goals most of the time – but one thought that the match was decided at 25:20 eight minutes before the end, was wrong.
Barcelona stroke back, reduced to only one goal in the final minute, when Macedonian national team captain Kiril Lazarov scored by a penalty. But despite one player less on the field, Skopje came through the Barca defence in their crucial attack – and Georgievski was ice-cold against Barca goalkeeper Danijel Saric.

Many handball fans will have difficulties sleeping tonight, but for all the right reasons. After a pressure-cooker in Skopje, Metalurg made giant-killing a habit of theirs as they defeat Barcelona 31:29 (15:11).Lead by the outspoken Lino Červar, brave Macedonians didn’t allow being star-struck facing the likes of Karabatić and Lazarov, as their immaculate defending shocked the Spanish champion. It was the experienced Červar whose name was on the lips of every fan in “Boris Trajkovski” venue tonight, as the highly acclaimed tactician masterminded this enormous success for Metalurg. Červar didn’t hide his emotions after the match, as he spoke openly and in no uncertain terms to the media representatives in the overcrowded press center in Skopje.
No one was happier that the Croatian expert, Lino Červar tonight; after taking the better of French powerhouse PSG at the start of the competition, his HC Metalurg side defeated Barca in the very last match of the Velux EHF Group stage.
“My heart is full. I am very glad for the guys” began Červar, soon to be interrupted with the ovation from the fully packed press center at “Boris Trajkovski” venue.
“Mitrevski is here as well. He was fantastic, just like everybody else. When we made our voice be heard, we were instantly confronted about our intentions. We do not have any. We are happy. We’re happy that we have a team like Metalurg here in Macedonia. We do a lot to promote handball, many people had followed this game both in and out of Europe. I was unhappy before the match, after I read one article, but it motivated me. My astrological sign is a Virgo and I’m very emotional person. Our defeat has been branded as a disgrace in Barcelona. It wasn’t disgraceful; no my friends, we didn’t play well, we played wrong, we played unseemly. Polish referees did all they possible could to push us of the cliff, and into the abyss for as long as they can.“ As mago di Umago drew up the memories from their first match in Barcelona, and then continued in a cauldron of intense emotions.
“We didn’t regret missing Mojsovski. You know what he is- a leader, a top-class player. You all know who Atman is. We did everything in our power to make him available for this match. We left our hearts on that court, and I am grateful to the fans. They (Barcelona) wanted to defeat us, to go through with the perfect record, undefeated. You’ve heard what Kire (Lazarov) has said; they are the prime favorites for the champion’s title.This is our third years as a Top 16 phase participant, along with five other teams.”
We schooled them
“The players opened the game fantastically. Barca was powerless against our 6-0 defense. Vele and Jono were always quick on their players’ shooting hand in defense; Barcelona couldn’t make their attempts on goal. There has been a little lethargy from our side in the end, due to the fear coming so close to the victory, but we overplayed them. A lot of courage, and nerve was displayed tonight from Mirkulovski and Ojlevski, also Georgievski. Tonight we weren’t playing slow- we were clever. Handball is more about the skill than running. There are many teams that can run a lot, while stuttering when it comes to handball. It’s not a competition in athletics”- breathlessly disclosed Červar, and concluded:
“Everything I say is to encourage you to work harder, all of us. Macedonians have a big heart.”

Metalurg je tako napravio korak više od Vardara, drugog makedonskog predstavnika u osmini finala, koji je s Barcom remizirao na istom mjestu.
Kiril Lazarov, koji je dao sve od sebe ne bi li u završnici susreta okrenuo rezultat u Barcinu korist, te je svoju momčad doveo na -1 pogotkom sa sedam metara, po susretu je kazao:"Iskreno čestitam Metalurgu, koji je odigrao odličnu utakmicu. Taktički je igra Metalurga bila odlično postavljena, no domaći su rukometaši k tome imali svoj dan. Igrali su pametno, sporo, nisu se nervirali. Iako nismo pobijedili, mi smo svoj cilj ostvarili i prvaci smo skupine. Ovaj poraz nije dramatičan, ali nam je dobro došao kao lekcija. Nadam se da ćemo stići do Final foura."
Bivši hrvatski izbornik, sada trener Metalurga Lino Červar od novinara je dobio pljesak zbog svoje prve izjave nakon susreta: "Puno mi je srce." Kad se slavlje stišalo, nastavio je: "Imamo dosta svojih problema, kad smo digli glas su nas kritizirali, no danas smo se dokazali kao pravi ambasadori Makedonije u svijetu."
Tome je dodao: "Ne bih se složio s Kirom da smo igrali sporo, mi smo igrali vješto. Ovo je rukomet, ovdje treba vještina, to nije atletika. Istina je da je Barcelona danas bila nemoćna protiv naše obrane 6-0. Siguran sam da nas je španjolska momčad željela pobijediti, no mi smo joj održali lekciju."
Metalurg je Barcu dobio igrajući odičnu obranu, a konačni je rasplet najavio s 15:11 na poluvremenu, no navijači nisu mogli slaviti prije isteka posljednje sekunde. Iako je domaća momčad imala 25:20 na ulasku u 52. minutu, Barcelona je skupila snage za još jedan pokušaj preokreta, došla na -1 no tada posustala. Prvi je to poraz Barce nakon 38 utakmica bez poraza, ističu španjolski mediji.

Rokometaši Metalurga so v 10. krogu lige prvakov senzacionalno premagali Barcelono.
Renato Vugrinec je k odmevni zmagi Metalurga prispeval pet golov.
Metalurg sicer ni mogel splezati na drugo mesto skupine C v ligi prvakov, a je v 10. krogu pred sedem tisoč svojimi navijači vseeno pripravil prvovrstni podvig. Ekipa Renata Vugrinca, ki je zabil pet golov, je premagala veliko Barcelono in ji prizadejala prvi sezonski poraz oziroma prvega po 36 tekmah.
Metalurgova obramba je v prvem polčasu prejela zgolj 11 golov, eden junakov srečanja pa je bil Goce Georgijevski , ki je zabil šest zadetkov, tudi odločilnega za 31:29 z igralcem manj 20 sekund pred koncem. Tako je končal Barcelonino serijo osmih zaporednih zmag v ligi prvakov. Zanimivo je, da je katalonska ekipa zvezdnikov v Skopju že pustila točko, in sicer v prvem krogu proti Vardarju. Vseeno pa Katalonci torkov žreb za osmino finala pričakujejo kot zmagovalci skupine.

По извлекувањето на екипата на КИФ Колдинг за наш противник во осминафиналната фаза на Лигата на шампионите, ви ја пренесуваме и првичната реакција на стратегот на нашиот тим, Лино Червар.
“Пред извлекувањето имавме три тешки противници, сега имаме само еден, екипата на Колдинг. Немав посакуван противник затоа што сметам дека Колдинг е извонредно опасен противник, исто како и двете германски екипи. Се работи за многу искусна екипа, составена од играчи кои ја поминаа границата од триесет години, екипа која извонредно игра во одбрана и ја има најдобрата одбрана во групната фаза од Лигата на шампионите. Имињата на Ким Андерсон, Ласе Боасен, Стефан Хундструп, Каспер Хвидт, Лаен Торстен, Бо Спелерберг, Алберто Рокас и другите, доволно зборуваат со кого ќе имаме работа.
Сепак, јас сакам позитивно да размислувам, затоа што теренот е тој каде што се ќе се решава. Ние ќе мораме да бидеме уште помотивирани, уште поборбени отколку на средбата против екипата на Барселона, тоа ќе треба да биде натпревар во кој ќе мораме да се надминеме, да бидеме дури и над своите моментални можности. Тоа што ме загрижува е состојбата на Павел Атман, кој за нас е од огромно значење, бидејки располагаме со лимитиран фонд на играчи.
Но, тоа што сигурно го знам е дека средбата со Колдинг во Скопје ќе биде вистински празник на спортот и очекувам опсада, вистинска инвазија на наши навивачи од целата земја. Сигурен сум дека овој пат публиката ќе биде осмиот, па, и деветтиот наш играч, затоа што луѓето се горди на Металург и на неговите успеси, а ракометот е национален спорт во Македонија“.

“Очекувам два интересни и неизвесни натпревари. Во првиот меч не очекува тешко гостување во Скопје, но јас сум оптимист. Имаме многу проблеми со повредени ракометари, Ким Андерсон нема да игра до крајот на сезоната, но затоа, за две до три недели, ни се враќаат неколку играчи и ќе бидеме максимално подготвени за мечевите со Металург. Сите зборуваат дека го добивме најтешкиот противник, но што е – тука е. Наше е добро да се подготвиме и да одиме на победа на двете средби”, рече Јенс Боесен.
