Wayne Rooney ends bitter feud with Sir Alex Ferguson and says he is the best manager ever

The relationship between the newly appointed England and United captain and Ferguson hit rock bottom after Robin van Persie was recruited from Arsenal and Rooney was told to play out of his normal position in attack. He made it clear he wanted to leave Old Trafford after he was dropped for a key Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

Chelsea almost tempted Rooney away for £30 million before he was persuaded to sign a £300,000-a-week five-year United contract, but the player was understood to be furious at comments Ferguson made about him. However, having committed his future to United and being entrusted with the captaincy by current manager Louis van Gaal, Rooney marked his 10 years at Old Trafford by mending fences with Ferguson.

“He was vitally important,” said Rooney in an interview broadcast last night by MUTV. “I’m grateful to him for having the faith to bring me in from Everton. I think he’s an incredible person and manager, the way you see his desire for the game. He certainly helped me a lot and helped us all.”

Rooney, who moved from Everton for £25 million as an 18-year-old, added: “At the time, I came into the squad as a young lad and there were a few other young lads. He brought all that together and made us world club champions.

“I’m very grateful for everything he’s done. It was a great feeling. Sir Alex is the best manager there’s been and for him to recognise my talent and want me to join this club was a great honour for me. He drove me over [to Old Trafford], just the two of us in his car. I remember being nervous but he was great and made me feel comfortable.”

Rooney added that he wanted to see out his contract with United.

“I hope so,” he said. “I think the plan is, I’ve just signed new long-term deal at the club and hopefully in five years’ time we’ll be sat down for a 15-year one [TV interview]. I don’t see any reason why not.”

Sir Аlex put that feeling in us, when we were going on away games, we just knew that we were going to win the game.
