Alex Ferguson didn't get his wish. Arsenal didn't batter Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Instead the Blues blasted our way back to the top with two Didier Drogba goals and our fourth win out of four against the 'big four' this season.
The merit of the victory was contested by the two managers with one very satisfied in victory and the other talking of his team's 'great performance' in defeat.
Carlo Ancelotti was especially grateful to a centre-forward who he described as fantastically motivated after the Africa Cup of Nations; a goalkeeper who was on the top of his game; and centre-back and skipper who received plenty of support from the home crowd and repaid them in performance level.
'My captain has a fantastic attitude,' said Ancelotti as surveyed the win and another clean sheet against Arsenal.
'He is doing well every game and for the team it is very important to have this leadership. He is always in control of the game and has a really strong mentality.'
Having recovered from a dead leg during the second-half and thrown his shirt into the Matthew Harding Lower at the end of the game, Terry was embraced by his manager as he left the pitch.
'It was a thanks for the performance,' explained the Italian. 'I wanted to hug every player because it was a difficult game and there was pressure.
'There was good motivation for us because we want to win the Premier League, we want to win other trophies. For this we have good motivation, nothing else.
'The defenders, strikers and midfielders all did a fantastic job. Petr Cech did a lot, he was in control for 90 minutes. It was not easy because Arsenal made fantastic attacking play but we had very good position on the pitch.'
Arsene Wenger's analysis of the game was as predictable as night following day.
'Chelsea won, you have to congratulate them, but we didn't get a demonstration of football,' analysed the Gunners boss.
'But they were efficient and at the end of the day, that is what made the difference. I believe that the first goal contributed highly to our defeat.
'We had today 70 per cent possession of the ball and we were not running after the ball for 90 minutes. We were always in an attacking position and when you have to risk everything going forward then of course Chelsea are good on counter-attacks.
'Our spirit was great, our performance was great but when you are 2-0 down in a big game like that, you demand too much.'
'We couldn't get back to 2-1 and get them really wobbling, he continued. 'One or two occasions I think we were unlucky with decisions from the referee but we had mountains of possession but couldn't convert it into goals.'
Wenger did describe Chelsea's defenders as fantastic and added: 'They are very experienced at the back. They make the foul in the right place, the little tricks of a very experienced team.
'They defended very well. I believe many times they were out of possession and managed to get back.'
Informed of Wenger's views, Ancelotti responded by complementing his side's all-round quality.
'Maybe Arsenal had more possession than us but this is not football, football is attack and defence as well as keeping possession when you need to, and results also.
'We deserved to win because you when you are two goals up it is important to do counter-attack and we did fantastic counter attack. It was an unbelievable second goal - fantastic movement, fantastic passing and fantastic shooting by Didier. This is football.
'We did fantastic defensive work because when it is 2-0 and you go to score more it is normal to have to defend. We did fantastic work together for 90 minutes and it was a very good performance. Sometimes you have to show attacking play and sometimes you have to defend.'
