Pan is again addressed in the Salaminian Chorus of the same tragedy of Sophocles, by the titles of author and director of the dances of the gods ( Θεον χοροποι΄ αναζ ), as being the author and disposer of the regular motions of the universe, of which these divine dances were symbols, which are said in the same passage to be ( αντοδαη ) self- taught to him. Both the Gnossian and Nysian dances are here included, the former sacred to Jupiter, and the latter to Bacchus ; for Pan, being the principle of universal order, partook of the nature of all the other gods.
