Greek EU Commissioner: “Return to the drachma is on the table”
AFP reports that yesterday thousands of demonstrators rallied in Athens and other major Greek cities to protest against the government’s austerity plans, following an online campaign inspired by the recent turnouts in Spain.
To Vima reports that Greek government spokesman George Petalotis has said that the idea of calling a referendum on a new set of austerity measures is not off the table.
The front page of Handelsblatt reports that German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble has warned of potential "contagion around the globe", and has rejected a restructuring of Greek debt saying: "At the moment it looks like the Greeks need more time.”
Bloomberg reports that former ECB Chief Economist Otmar Issing has told a press conference that Greece is “insolvent.”
Reuters Deutschland reports that the German Green party is planning to sue the German government regarding a lack of information for German MPs on important euro decisions such as the establishment of the European Stability Mechanism, the eurozone’s post-2013 permanent bail-out fund.
Meanwhile, yesterday the Finnish Parliament approved the €78bn Portuguese bail-out, despite opposition from the True Finns and the Left Alliance.
An article in Spain’s main financial daily Expansión cites Open Europe research arguing that a number of external factors – such as a Greek or Portuguese debt restructuring – could make contagion of the eurozone debt crisis to Spain more likely.
Open Europe’s Raoul Ruparel is also quoted saying: “It’s unlikely that a bail-out will solve any of Portugal’s or Greece’s fundamental problems. Short-term loans are simply insufficient.”
