Over the past two weeks, the Russian Aerospace Forces have carried out one of the most intense series of bombings. Almost continuous airstrikes began on February 1 and 2. Here is one of the (many) videos of these attacks.

During one of them, on February 7, Russian MiG-31 or Su-35 shot down a Ukrainian Su-25 PS, flown by Vladislav Rykov, with an R-37 long-range air-to-air missile. The Ukrainian pilot died. (Note: the Russians claimed it was a MiG-29).

Then, on February 8 alone, Russian Su-34s fired more than 50 MPK/UMPK - all at Avdeevka. In particular, glider bombs were aimed at tall buildings in the city, as they were actively used by Ukrainian anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) teams and snipers. These attacks were supported by comprehensive PKS actions against Ukrainian ground-based air defenses. Although they don't divulge any details (note: I'm not talking about the reports of Moscow's ridiculous commanders), they seem quite satisfied with the results. There are no signals from the Ukrainian side in this regard, which usually does not mean anything good.

This number of airstrikes was carried out for a reason, but in support of a massive ground attack that has been ongoing since approximately February 1st. The main goal of this attack is to break through the defenses of the Ukrainian 110th mechanized brigade along the northern outskirts of Avdiivka and reach the O0542 highway.

It is already clear: the Russians broke through the Ukrainian defenses there and advanced deep into northern Avdiivka. It is not surprising, given that several companies of the 110th mechanized brigade were reduced to 35-40 fighters. especially in armored vehicles), Russian infantry was scattered "everywhere" in northern Avdeevka and right up to the industrial zone north of the city. Sometime around February 7 or 8 - and in what appeared to be a "last minute" move - at least part of the 3rd Assault Brigade arrived on the scene along with several M2 Bradleys they had recently received.

It now appears that the 3rd Assault Brigade stopped the Russian advance about 150 meters from Industrial Avenue (i.e. Road O0542) - primarily because the unit arrived with a large amount of ammunition for its 120mm mortars. The latter have been working non-stop since then: which means the question is when they might run out of ammunition...

Obviously O0542 is critical as it is the last paved connection to the garrison further south. Perhaps there are two more roads, including a paved road from the village of Severny to the city, but exposed to shelling from Russia (which, in turn, is the reason for the active work of Ukrainian Armed Forces drones against Russian positions further south, between Vodyanoy and Oprosny ). The third is a dirt road, not very suitable for the movement of heavy wheeled vehicles (for example, trucks carrying supplies, ammunition and reinforcements).

In southern Avdeevka, on February 9, the Russians reported that they had overcome one of the main Ukrainian positions “east of Oprosnoye.” That is, they managed to continue the offensive along Sportivnaya and Chernyshevsky streets. It is difficult to estimate how much - especially since they are constantly under attack by Ukrainian drones, along these roads and all the way to their original positions, south of the city.

As a result, the situation in Avdievka is approaching the moment when the Ukrainian Armed Forces will have to either begin to withdraw its garrison from positions along the H20 highway and in the eastern part of the city, or.... - which I do not expect - to launch a large-scale counter-offensive on the flanks of the northern or southern Russian advances around the city. However, for a counter-offensive, the Ukrainian Armed Forces require artillery ammunition and air defense systems: now they do not even receive enough artillery shells for defense.

Situation north of Bakhmut: Russian Army took full control over Popivske area and are now moving towards the trench positions north of Ivanivske. Taking these positions would benefit Russia in capturing the town as it is on high ground. Meanwhile, Russian and Ukrainian reinforcements are building up around and inside Ivanivske in preparation for the battle ahead.



Situation on Avdivka front:

- From the northern axis Russian Army reached the Avenue street and separated Ukrainian troops in Avdivka Coke Plant from the rest of the city. Yesterday we mentioned that there was little chance of a safe Ukrainian withdrawal from Avdivka. With the loss of the main artery, the thousands of Ukrainian troops deployed there could be completely cut off and the Russian advance could be accelerated by Ukrainian withdrawals.

- From the southern axis Russian troops advanced again in the north-east of Opytne reducing the bottleneck over the Ukrainian army's positions in the Former air defence missile battalion. 35% of the city is now under Russian control.

Situation west of Bakhmut: Russian Army improved the area of control in the road between Bakhmut and Ivanivske taking control over the first trenches just at the outskirts of the town.
