Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has vowed to continue improving the team although the club may not be chasing a ‘Galactico’ signing this summer, as he claims there aren’t many left for Los Blancos to target.
Perez has made it a policy during his two spells as Real chief to sign at least one star name each year, hence the term ‘Galacticos’- a team full of world-class players.
The ten-time European Cup winners have, as usual, been linked with big-name signings such as Luis Suarez and Ivan Rakitic. However, despite Perez admitting, to Spanish radio station Cadena Cope, that he likes these players, he is still unsure if he will be pursuing them during the transfer window,
“I like all good players, especially those of Real Madrid, but I like them all. Luis Suarez? There are many good players, we will keep improving the squad. There are not too many (Galacticos), they’re all here!”
Last season’s ‘Galactico’, Gareth Bale, the most expensive one there has ever been at €100 million, has made an excellent start to his career at the Bernabeu according to Perez, with the decisive goals in the finals of the Copa del Rey and the Champions League which Real both won,
“One goal is not worth €100 million, but Gareth was the best player in the Premier League. The press attacked the player but he has demonstrated his quality at decisive points throughout the season.”
Some of the players, particularly the youngsters, have been linked with a move away from the capital, but even though Perez didn’t deny that the likes of Alvaro Morata could be sold with a buy-back option, he insists there won’t be too much outward movement,
“I am friends with the all the presidents and they all call me when they want a player – but if they called me at this time, I would tell them nobody is for sale – but in football you never know, last year we sold Ozil when nobody expected it – football is like that.”
Perez also denied that Iker Casillas had played his last match for Los Merengues,
“I do not think the final in Lisbon was his (Casillas) last match as a Real player.”
He went on to add that winning La Decima last weekend has lifted the pressure off everyone at the club,
“I’m very happy to have won La Decima and even more so on seeing the fans’ satisfaction. It had become something of an obsession for us Real Madrid fans and now we are freed of it. Now we look to winning the eleventh, but without as much pressure to do so. Winning the tenth Champions League trophy has liberated us. This is our competition and in it we will continue to build on Real Madrid’s legend.”
