Barcelona have maintained their devastating home form in La Liga, with an emphatic 5-0 win over Atlético Madrid. Lionel Messi stole the show and scored a fantastic hat trick, after David Villa opened the score and Atlético Madrid’s Miranda scored an own goal. In the end, Atlético Madrid’s manager Gregorio Manzano admitted that there was nothing his team could do, Barcelona were simply too good on the night.
Here are the player ratings for another magnificent Barcelona performance.
Victor Valdés – 7.5
Had a very calm night with literally nothing to do. His passing and distribution were impeccable, though.
Éric Abidal – 7.5
Barcelona’s defense had very little to do in this game. That said, Abidal was great whenever called upon, making some nice interceptions and contributing in attack sometimes.
Javier Mascherano – 7.5
Like Abidal, he was great whenever necessary. He looked very comfortable at the back for the entire 90 minutes and efficiently led Barcelona’s backline.
Daniel Alves – 7.5
He had literally nothing to do in the first half, as Atlético didn’t manage to attack consistently. When he returned to his usual right back (in a back four) position, he looked very threatening in attack, with some great runs and passes. He wasn’t as influential as usual, but he had a very solid performance.
Sergio Busquets – 8
A classic Busquets performance. He didn’t do anything spectacular, but he was very effective. He kept it simple and played mostly one touch football but he was sensational. His passing and distribution were flawless. He was subbed in the second half with the Champions League game against BATE Borisov in mind.
Xavi Hernandez – 9
Absolutely superb, genius as always. Xavi might be about to turn 32, but he looks fit enough to play for many more years. His passing and movement are an example to every young midfielder out there, and his vision and football intelligence are unique. He made a brilliant assist for Villa’s first goal and was behind everything Barcelona did going forward. Another great performance from the greatest midfielder of his generation.
Thiago Alcantara – 8
If Xavi is the greatest midfielder of the current generation, Thiago is a prime candidate to be the greatest of his. At the tender age of 20, he plays as like a seasoned professional, showing no signs of inexperience. He looks like he has been playing in the first team for many years. He showed great composure on the ball, great passing and vision. As if this were not enough, his dribbling and trickery is sometimes reminiscent of the great Ronaldinho in his prime. The nutmeg he performed on a Atletico defender was just amazing. The future of Barcelona’s midfield is in great hands.
Cesc Fabregas – 7.5
Like Thiago, Cesc is the future. Also like Thiago, he looks like he never left. Today, he wasn’t as active as his midfield partners, but he did his role very well. He already shows great chemistry with all his teammates and he knows exactly when to pick a pass and how to move on the pitch. He can only get even better with time, a scary prospect for teams attempting to dethrone Barcelona.
Pedro Rodriguez – 7.5
Had a great game overall, linking up very well with his attacking teammates. The only flaw in his performance is that he could never get into good shooting/scoring positions, but it was still a very good performance from Pedrito.
David Villa – 8.5
His goal was pure class, and so was his performance. His passing and link-up play were top notch and he made some threatening runs that were not picked up by his teammates. He has now scored four goals in the past four games. Overall, a very good game and a very good start to the season for El Guaje.
Lionel Messi – 9.5
There’s not much to say here. Messi is by very far the greatest player of this generation and is surely among the very best players ever to kick a ball. He has made the extraordinary look rather ordinary. Two of his goals today would be the best goals in most players’ careers, but for Messi such goals have become natural and expected every week. Atlético were unlucky to face a Messi who was even more inspired than usual and simply gave their defense no chance. La Pulga now has 12 goals and 10 assists in 9 matches, and we’re not even in October…
Substitutions:
Gerard Piqué – 6
Came into the match with 37 minutes left to play and didn’t have much to do. Picked up an avoidable yellow card, though, and it’s clear that he needs a few more matches to regain his usual sharpness.
Seydou Keita – 6
Replaced Fabregas late in the second half and didn’t really have a big impact, although he did make some good passes.
Maxwell Andrade – 6
Replaced Abidal with ten minutes left and was untroubled. He did show some good energy, getting involved in some attacking moves.
