Some people call me negative. Others call me cynical. I look at myself as a realist who just sees things the way they are.
I don’t typically get caught up in hype and tend to stay true to the facts of what’s going down. I’m like Bobby De Niro in “Casino.” Keep things simple and to the point while still having a respected opinion. The rest I leave to guys like Joe Pesci. The crazed ones.
So having said that, I’m going to bring everyone down to earth and point out that the heavyweight bout between Chelsea and Manchester United on Sunday will be more like a powderpuff tickle fight.
I’ll begrudgingly begin with that match, move on to the City-Everton affair set for Monday and then end things with a few quick notes about Roy boy facing his old team at Anfield. Should make for a nice little pre-Christmas stocking stuffer. Next Friday’s edition though, will be so chocked full of holiday cheer that I’ll have candy canes coming out of my ears and garland from my fingers. I don’t even know if I’m ready for it…
Let’s hold back yuletide goodness for now and get started previewing what could likely be the worst high-profile match in the history of sports.
The Bacon (as in Bringing It Home)
Chelsea vs. Manchester United (Stamford Bridge, December 19th, 11:00 a.m. ET, Fox Soccer Channel)
As history has shown us, when these two teams get together, despite their extraordinary amounts of talent and title implications, the result isn’t always that prolific.
Not including the two Community Shield meetings (which I might add, could be the worst matches of the lot), we’ve seen three draws and a number of insufferable one-goal matches over the last three seasons. Even the Champions League final was a letdown.
Chelsea | Happier times against United
Who knows why this is, but the teams just don’t seem to play to their potential when going head-to-head. Maybe they just cancel each other out like the opposite enda of a magnet or something. Typically, both sides have strong defenses and the attacking portion just can’t break through.
With Frank Lampard back in the XI for the blues, they’ll have more of a spark going forward as without him in the middle over the last few months, the midfield really did seem to lack direction and clout. He is the man that ties those players together. Think about it: Essien, Obi Mikel, Malouda, Ramires...none are really the guy you want pulling the strings for the rest of the team. You could argue that the now moved on Deco and Michael Ballack could have done the job in Lamp’s stead, but alas, they are an afterthought. Yossi Benayoun could even be a possibility, but he’s hurt.
With fat Frank back making things happen, the Blues should hopefully be a little more dynamic when they face league-leading United. And to be Frank with you, they’ll have to be.
Frank Lampard | Get up, stand up.
Carlo Ancelotti says it’s not the end of the world if his Blues team lose on Sunday. I beg to differ. If that does happen, at home, with Arsenal up next, Chelsea will be down six points and United still have that cheeky game in hand against Blackpool. Ruh-roh. As we discussed, I’m being realistic here. Mr. Long Cigarette is in outer space and unless he comes down soon, his head may be forced to spew crazy nonsense at a new club.
On the other side of the technical area is Sir Alex Ferguson who is enjoying a fine start to his 83rd season in charge of the Red Devils and if nothing else has proven that early hiccups (that were only draws, mind you) can be overcome. His team is in a very nice position right now and a win or even just a point from the Bridge would be a big boost.
Ji-Sung Park | All he does is win big games.
With the whole country watching on Sunday afternoon, I really think the edge has to be on Manchester United’s side. They are the team in form and getting an early goal or two would really put the screws on Chelsea’s chances. Hopefully Carlo starts Drogba and Anelka to show his intentions, but I wouldn’t count on it. I’ll give the home side a chance just because of the desperation factor, but everything else has to lean in United’s favor.
TFE Prediction: I really want to say draw here, but in an effort to keep things interesting, we’ll say United get a huge 1-0 win on the road.
