Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov's family fear that mobsters have kidnapped his brother.
Berbatov was said to be "monitoring developments" in their native Bulgaria, where troubled Asen has not been seen for a month.
Asen, 23, is believed to have run up business debts at a boutique he runs with wife Mimi.
Three months ago armed police stormed his home and seized computers and documents in connection with an alleged credit card and ATM fraud linked to the fashion store.
The Sun quoted friends as saying that he has since "vanished into thin air" and not been answering mobile calls.
Police in the southern city of Blagoevgrad are aware of his disappearance, but said the family had yet to officially report him missing.
A spokesman said: "Until that happens we cannot investigate."
Last year there were reports of kidnap threats to Berbatov's family by a local gang demanding 500,000 pounds.
Berbatov currently on United's US tour is believed to have fallen out with Asen after a row over his younger brother's alleged gambling and cocaine habits.
