INTERNATIONALS: STURRIDGE SCORES BUT MALOUDA SUFFERS AGAIN

There were wins for Chelsea's England players at two age levels but on a night new responsibility was handed to Florent Malouda, France suffered a shock home defeat.
Ashley Cole played a full 90 minutes at Wembley and also played a part in Jermain Defoe's early goal, showing tenacity before crossing for the Spurs striker to volley home.
England won their opening Euro 2012 qualifier 4-0 against Bulgaria with Adam Johnson on the scoresheet and Defoe completing a hat-trick to few smiles from Tottenham supporters. That was because Defoe's club team-mate Michael Dawson appeared to suffer a serious leg injury.
Malouda was handed the France captaincy by new coach Laurent Blanc with Patrice Evra serving a ban but Les Bleus did nothing to lift the spirits of their fans following the World Cup. They suffered an embarrassing 1-0 defeat in Paris to Belarus, the goal coming on 84 minutes.
Yury Zhirkov was suspended for Russia's 2-0 away win in Andorra but will be available on Tuesday to face Slovakia.
A Daniel Sturridge goal separated England 21s from their Portuguese counterparts in a competitive fixture.
Playing a young Portugal team on their own soil must be one of the biggest tests for an Under 21 side but Sturridge finished off a pass from Manchester United's Tom Cleverley just past the half-hour point to earn a deserved win. It was his second goal in seven appearances at this level. He could have scored a second goal on the night in the 90th minute but volleyed off target.
With Newcastle's Andy Carroll unavailable through injury, the Chelsea striker started and finish the game. Michael Mancienne was captain but was forced off after 75 minutes due to a face injury. Ryan Bertrand played the full game at full-back, Jack Cork came on with 84 minutes gone.
Stuart Pearce's side beat Portugal at home earlier in their European Championship qualification group. They trail Greece and need a win at home to Lithuania in their final game at Colchester on Tuesday.
18-year-old Conor Clifford played the first 81 minutes of Republic of Ireland Under 21s' 1-0 away defeat in Switzerland. Ireland's hopes of qualifying for the finals had long gone. Fabio Borini remained a sub unused by Pierluigi Casiraghi as Italy Under 21s beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-0 away. Italy remain in the hunt.
On Thursday, a Dutch Under 21 side minus injured Jeffrey Bruma lost a 100 per cent record that had lasted seven games when they lost 2-1 away in Spain. Patrick van Aanholt played the full game for the Netherlands.
