Dear Mr. Vaknin,
I just read your August 12 article in American Chronicle about the
Macedonian wages and sadly enough, your conclusion at the end is reflecting
the reality.
However there are a couple of things that seem unclear to me.
First of all I can not understand the target group for your message. Is it a
message for the government, foreign investors or the people of Macedonia?
Another remark is that whatever the target group, your way towards the
conclusion resembles an explanation I would expect from low educated men
drinking in front of local minimarkets. A PhD should know better than
explaining how one drowned in a lake with average depth of 1 meter.
What does this mean?
In an example with very rough approximation this means that out of X number
of factories in the USA or Western Europe, 80% are more productive than the
average while, in Macedonia this percentage might be 20% or less. These 20%
of very productive factories in Macedonia create the national GDP. Therefore
it does not make sense to divide the GDP with the size of the total
workforce. This model can not apply to any country and creates distorted
picture about the real situation, hence my example with the lake with 1
meter average depth.
If you want to analyze deeper, the relation between the GDP, the workforce
and the successful companies can take you to conclusions that the public
administration is large, that these 20% of highly productive companies bare
the burden of the state and so on. Making a simple conclusion that the wages
are sky high or the overall productivity is low is trivial.
At the end I would gladly agree with you in your final conclusion. Macedonia
needs to work hard in all these spheres to support the other 80% of less
productive companies so they can reach the productivity level of the other
20%.

Ognen Basarovski

Dear Ognen,
Thank you for writing to me.
GDP labor unit costs is the most widespread measure of a country's
productivity. It is used by the IMF, World Bank, the American government,
and every economist I know. And, yes, it is an average - but, so are all
other economic parameters (for instance, consumer price inflation).
GDP comprises not only manufacturing, but also government and remittances.
Every country has more and less productive sectors. That is precisely my
analysis: Macedonia ON AVERAGE is a low-productivity country. So, we agree
on the
conclusion.
Take care.
Sam

Hi Sam,
Thank you for the prompt reply and the explanation.
If your conclusion is that the COUNTRY is less productive you should clearly
state it in the article. Your statements in the text might lead to a
conclusion that:
1. The Macedonian worker ("The Macedonian, by comparison, produces a paltry
1200 euros a month") is the reason for the situation.
2. Because he is not productive, the Macedonian worker is overpaid.
People can easily be offended and not understand your aims, which I want to
believe are good, since you decided to live in this country and share your
life with them.
Best regards,
Ognen
------------------------
Ognen, no offense, but, if you want to be taken seriously, you are
well-advised to confine your comments to subjects you know and master.
Economics is not among them.
Countries cannot be productive. Only workers are productive.
Workers - in industry, services, government, everywhere - are either
productive or they are not productive.
So, yes, this is precisely the situation:
1. The Macedonian worker ("The Macedonian, by comparison, produces a paltry
1200 euros a month") is the reason for the situation.
2. Because he is not productive, the Macedonian worker is overpaid.
Macedonians produce like Africans and consume like Germans. This grandiose
fantasy must and will end badly.
Finally:
I am a journalist. My first and only allegiance is to the truth as I see it.
I don't really care if I hurt anyone's deicate feelings in the process.
Macedonians need to grow up, stop whining, stop with their crazy paranoias
("my aim" ???) and start learning from others. Failures and beggars can't be
choosers.
Sam
-------------------------
Hi Sam,
What seemed to be an ordinary day, turned out to be an excellent discussion.
Short explanation: your article is not logical for me which is why I ask
questions and dare to comment. If I knew better about the macro economy I
would have written something similar or even practice it. Since I do not
know, I turn to you and ask with hope that I learn something and become more productive ).
No offense, but if you want to be taken seriously you need to offer better
explanation for the situation in Macedonia than the one given in your
article. As I already said, the conclusion at the end is true, however the
logic behind is trivial. As far as mastery is concerned, had you mastered
economy well enough would you have practiced it as a journalist in
Macedonia?
Working in Macedonia you are among the creators of the GDP. Does it mean
that you also produce like African and consume like a German? I hope not.
What do you really mean when you say Macedonians produce like Africans and consume like Germans? I know people who live in Macedonia that produce like Germans and consume like Africans. I also know people who produce like
Germans and consume like Germans. Had the problem been so simple, the
solution would have been even simpler: Import 1000 very productive Germans and the GDP would have grown.
Even if you are a journalist you must have an aim. Make a better society is
a good one ). Maybe yours is spotting mistakes and writing about them.
This is also good, but Janko is doing it in "Jadi Burek" on his blog and on
one of the local TV stations in Skopje. He is not even a PhD. I don't think
that you have to be a PhD journalist in order to spot mistakes.
I agree with you that many people in Macedonia need to grow up and start
learning from others. If I for example try to grow up and maybe learn from
you what learning material do you have to offer apart from silly
explanations and angry voice? If you possess so much knowledge it would be a pity not to share it and help people with concrete advices. Just shouting
that they produce like Africans and consume like Germans will not help.
Best regards,
Ognen

OK, Ognen. You are Macedonian, so, of course, you know best and you are
right and no one can teach you anything (except, maybe, Janko in Jadi
Burek).
Write to me when you grow up. Since, you are a Macedonian, though, I
will not hold my breath...))
