It was 77 minutes into the match at the BayArena when every one of the 29,072 crowd at the BayArena was gripped by the moment: When the number six came up the board to signal a substitution many Werkself fans and long-serving Bayer 04 captain must have felt very emotional when the whole of the ground rose as one to show their appreciation for Bayer 04 skipper: A standing ovation for Simon Rolfes who was replaced by Gonzalo Castro late on in the 2-0 home win against Hoffenheim.
That was one of the numerous emotional high points in Bayer 04’s final home game of the season that marked as end-off for longstanding Bayer 04 players Simon Rolfes and Stefan Reinartz.
Rolfes named honorary captain
Bayer 04 CEO Michael Schade and sporting director Rudi Völler made a pre-match presentation on the pitch. The 33-year-old Rolfes, who ends his playing career after next weekend’s final game of the season away to Eintracht Frankfurt, completed 287 Bundesliga games and was named the fourth honorary captain at the club alongside Ulf Kirsten, Bernd Schneider and Carsten Ramelow. Ahead of the start of his last home game after ten years at Bayer 04 Simon Rolfes ran onto the pitch with his daughter Livia Marie and she later joined her dad on his lap of honour.
