A lot of the football pundits and fans alike were affixed by the fact the Chelsea were beaten by a 10 men PSG side.
Aside from it making a decent news headline, this should not come as a surprise given that Chelsea, at a DNA level are still structured around 1-dimensional players. This is a weaknesses that was eventually going to be exploited when playing against top tier teams.
Mourinho decided to start the game (and complete it) with Ramires, a player who is very weak physically and who was easily bullied by the opposition players (not your typical Mourinho well built player). He cant dribble for his life and is an expert at losing ball possession with his awful shooting and dribbling.
Then comes Oscar; a perfect example of no matter how skilled you are with the ball, it all boils down to your speed. Speed is the life force of any sport. Unfortunately, Oscar lacks in this department, so no matter how hard he works at improving his other skill sets, it just wont work. It's a given, a fact. He's just not cut to be an elite player and there is nothing wrong about that. It's the responsibility of the manager to know the limitations of the players at his disposal. If Oscar manages to overtake a player for a brief moment, the player will recover his defensive position and lock him down. His passing skills are not up to the mark. The only position suitable for him that I can think of would be up as a poacher, but that is why Chelsea has Drogba, Remy and Costa, so his services are / were not really required.
Fabregas, same thing. Average to good ball handling skills, excellent field vision and good passing, but Fabre lacks in the speed department, so during a high intensity games, there is only much he can do and if his colleagues are not producing the goods, Fabre can't carry the team over his shoulders. Because again, he is not cut for that. The manager should be well aware of this fact. So he is another example of a tactical player who should be given specific roles and entered into the game during certain scenarios, not a player to start and complete highly important games with.
The point is, Chelsea is not structured to take advantage of the "man count advantage". Chances are PSG wouldve been able to handle the situation with the same efficacy even if they were down to 9 men. Man count advantage is beneficial when you have versatile players who can over-run the opposition and arise the need of double marking as in the case of Hazard and Willian.
Hazard is a player who can never be man marked and requires double marking and in some cases (when he is at the top of his game, triple marked). Willian is another player who is very difficult to man mark and requires on average to be man marked with a back up marker in a close range .
That is when 1 + 1 = 5.
Now what was Willian doing during the first half? The answer, as i am sure everybody knows, is warming the bench. What benefit would it be if Hazard draws or even manages to over-take 3 players when the only support he has is from the likes of an Oscar, a Ramires and a poacher playing out of his position on the left wing (Costa)? The answer is none.
So to sum it up, Chelsea were in a 1 + 1 = 0 scenario / formation.
I hope this explanation has cleared any remaining doubts of those who keep on saying that Chelsea werent able to handle a 10man PSG side, because it all boils down to this. It doesnt matter whether PSG were playing 11 or down to 9, Chelsea does not play possession football. Chances are the red card was an extra motive to the PSG players and put them under more pressure to produce more outcome with minimal errors.

1) I dont know how long more it will take him to understand that the game is not about him anymore (never was), but the 11 players he fields. I wouldnt hold my breath on this; it might take a lifetime without him finding the answer. He will need external help or learn it the hard way (The way things are going now) through experiencing and tasting failure. He will learn more from this season's failures than he has ever learnt from all his previous wins but it really is a matter of choice and it doesnt have to go down that road.
2) Stop his war of words with Wenger; Get over him and move on. Channel this hate energy into something more constructive. Beat the man sound and square and shake his hand like a real man. It's just football, a sport where you are coaching kids who run after a ball to put it inside a net. Keep it Simple Stupid.
3) Stop defending the Premiere league whilst attacking other leagues; "this is the BPL not La Liga or bundesliga...so 10 points are nothing....etc". That is not your job. Shut up and do your job.
4) Identifying the short term predicaments: start by playing games whilst focusing on not conceding goals. Goals will come eventually.
He could even take the above and put into practice today and turn the momentum to his side by transforming this Chelsea Team into an under-dog side; his secret sauce and the story of his career so far. Above action points (quick fixes) ought to buy more time for:
Intermediate Fixes:
1) Identifying the source of problems and addressing in the Jan window; this is what this thread is about. As a rule of thumb, players selected by Mourinho are talent limited: One dimensional players who are good in one particular aspect / face of the game. This is what puts his side at a dis-advantage of being out-numbered by other teams with more talents since football is never an 11 vs 11 sport. Not because he doesnt understand talent when he sees it but because deep down he wants all success to be credited to him and not the players. That's why he's buying rejects and players who are past their prime in recent seasons.
Sounds simple but very difficult to put into practice because it goes against his nature. He is his worst enemy. It takes real men and a lot of gut to acknowledge ones mistakes, and work on fixing them.
Predobra analiza od tipot. Ubavo pisano.
