Oppose the unfair targeting of Turkey and Macedonia by the Greek-American interest group
Raise voice against the letter by American Hellenic Institute to Secretary Clinton
In his July 12, 2011 letter sent to Secretary Clinton ahead of her visit to Athens, Mr. Nick Larigakis of the Greek-American interest group, American Hellenic Institute (AHI), failed to address the key current issues of concern in the U.S-Greece relations. Instead of addressing Greece’s catastrophic economic crisis, negatively affecting the U.S. economy and draining the European financial resources, the author is focused on attacking the neighboring nations of Turkey and Macedonia using counter productive and ethnocentric rhetoric.
Reflecting the xenophobic foreign policy pursued by the Greek government, the AHI letter targets the Balkan nation of Macedonia by denying its people the right for their historic identity. Using its membership and leverage in international structures, Greece continues to block Macedonia’s long overdue accession to NATO and the EU by disputing country’s official name. Meanwhile, the United States and 131 other nations rightfully recognize the constitutional name of the Republic of Macedonia chosen by its people to reflect their unique cultural heritage.
Since gaining independence in 1991, the Republic of Macedonia has been a steadfast partner and ally of the United States. During the conflict in Kosovo, Macedonia provided refuge to over 360,000 displaced civilians and served as a logistical center for international relief operations in the neighboring province. Macedonian government also opened the country’s airspace to U.S. and NATO warplanes on a mission in former Yugoslavia and deployed an armed contingent in support of the US-led Operation Iraqi Freedom. Unlike the NATO member Greece, which according to the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress, provides minimal aid, Macedonia is currently the fourth largest per capita contributor to the ISAF mission in Afghanistan.
Furthermore, the AHI letter blames Turkey and Turkish Cypriots for the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation by Turkish Armed Forces. In compliance with the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee signed by Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom, this humanitarian operation was carried out in the aftermath of Greek military junta’s overthrow of the elected government in Cyprus and its attempts to annex the island nation to Greece. Over 100,000 native Turkish Cypriots, labeled as “colonists” in a racist tone by the AHI author, were forcefully displaced from their homes and scores were subjected to massacre and ethnic cleansing by Greek forces and Greek Cypriot militants in 1963 – 1974.
The AHI letter also asks Secretary Clinton to apply pressure on Turkey to grant some international legal status to the Greek Orthodox religious congregation in Istanbul. Attempts to do so constitute an interference into sovereign constitutional affairs of secular Turkey and serve as a destabilizing emphasis on religious differences in a broader sensitive region.
I join members of the Pax Turcica Institute (PTI), Assembly of Turkish-American Associations (ATAA), United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD), Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA), and all Turkish-, Turkic- and Macedonian-Americans to express my deepest concern about the AHI attempts to mislead the US foreign policy.
In view of Secretary Clinton’s ongoing visit to Greece, I call upon the Administration to apply pressure on the Greek government to take a more constructive stance on Cyprus and Macedonia issues, to put an end to ethnocentric and Turcophobic rhetoric, and to focus on resolving a severe Greek economic crisis which negatively reverberates on the U.S. and global economic recovery.
