Albania borrows €250M from banks to fund deficit

TIRANA, Albania: Albania's Finance Ministry said Thursday it would borrow €250 million ($313.6 million) from Deutsche Bank and Greece's Alpha Bank to fund its budget deficit.
The two banks were selected after an international tender with seven bidders, the ministry said in a statement.
It gave no details for the loan, which is expected to fund the budget deficit and the construction of a new highway to neighboring Kosovo. Albania's 2009 budget deficit is projected at 4.2 percent of gross domestic product.
Last year, the government also took a €230 million loan to cover its budget deficit.

1.Here many companies have a saying "Investing in peope", I guess Greeks could say "Investing in people that hate us". What is it with buisness people investing in Albania, Skopia or Turkey.

2.I wounldn't expect them to pay it back thou. Why don't they lend them some Albanians instead (500,000 of them) and then tell the Shiptars they don't have to give them back.

ALBANIA WANTS TO BUY 34 HELLICOPTERS FROM FRANCE

According to newspaper "Libertas" the Albanian PM Berisha begins his plain for modernisation of Albanian army, only tow week after Albania join NATO alliance. The foreign military experts have remained stunned for the decision of Berisha who on Aprill 24 must meet with french president Nickolas Sarkozy in Paris.



Albania poseses about 12 helicopter from military aids of Italy and Germany in a time when the obligation of NATO for 2% or General Public Product to be planed for militarisation.



But according to "Libertas" there is no information about the costs of the french helicopters while Tirana has seeing the possibility to buy "Sikorsky" helicopters from USA.

Gunmen kill Albanian opposition MP ahead of polls



Gunmen shot and killed an Albanian opposition Socialist Party lawmaker on Saturday evening, police said, as the west Balkan country prepares to hold elections seen as crucial in its bid for European Union accession.

The killing of Fatmir Xhindi, 49, is likely to heighten tension ahead of the June 28 general elections, which pit the ruling Democratic Party of Prime Minister Sali Berisha against the main opposition Socialist Party led by Edi Rama.


Albania is one of Europe's poorest countries and faces an uphill struggle to join the EU, which remains to be convinced of its democratic credentials. The country formally applied for EU membership on April 28. The Interior Ministry said Xhindi was shot inside the courtyard of his own home just after parking his car.


"He was shot and killed with six bullets and died on the way to hospital," said police spokesman Klodian Branko, quoting from a statement by police in Fier, the regional centre near Roskovec in southern Albania where Xhindi was killed.


Xhindi is the second lawmaker to be killed in Albania since the fall of communism in 1990. The assassination of Democratic Party lawmaker Azem Hajdari in September 1998 enraged his supporters, who took over government offices and the public television broadcaster for several days.


The Socialists said they were shocked by Xhindi's killing.
Describing him as a "symbol of maturity and friendship who exuded benevolence," senior Socialist Gramoz Ruci said he did not exclude the possibility that the killing was politically motivated.


Parliament's speaker Jozefina Topalli, a Democrat, and Socialist Party leader Edi Rama travelled to Roskovec to comfort Xhindi's family. Rama said the Socialists were "impatiently waiting" for police to shed light on the killing.
No violence was reported.

Тирана, 26 септември (МИА) - Поглаварот на Албанската православна црква, Анастас Јанулатос повеќе од 16 години чека албанско државјанство.
Јанулатос, како што јави дописникот на МИА од Тирана, веднаш по доаѓањето во Албанија побарал да добие и албанско државјанство, но постапката е сеуште статус кво.
Тој поседува грчка патна исправа, каде стои дека е Грк по националност и оти е грчки државјанин.
Во барањето навел дека бара албанско државјанство без да се откаже од грчкото, иако за тоа нема потреба бидејќи Албанија дозволува двојно државјанство.
Јанулатос до пред неколку години воопшто не го говореше албанскиот јазик. Добивањето државјанство е во рацете на шефот на државата, што значи дека Јанулатос тоа право не го остварил ни кога на чело на државата бил Сали Бериша, ни Реџеп Мејдани, ни Алфред Моисиу, а повеќе од година и Бамир Топи. П
рашањето го актуелизираа албанските медиуми по веста дека Грција ќе им даде пасоши на илјада албански државјани, кои се изјаснуваат како Грци, а работат и живеат во Грција. Исто толку албански Грци, грчки пасоши добија лани.

Satellite broadband for Albanian schools


16 Oct 09 - OTE-owned satellite operator Hellas Sat is to provide broadband internet via satellite to 300 remote schools in Albania via its Hellas Sat 2 satellite.
Equipment is being installed by Hellas Sat and Albania’s Starsat, a subsidiary of telco Albtelecom. The project, which is being coordinated by the Albanian prime minister’s office, will see schools in towns including Argyrokastro, Tepeleni, Avlona, Dyrrachio, Korytsa, as well as at villages around the capital city Tirana, connected via satellite.

Albanian writer Ismail Kadare was awarded Spain's Prince of Asturias literature prize on Wednesday in recognition of the social commitment in his work.

Describing him as one of the greatest authors in world literature, prize organizers said Kadare "represents the pinnacle of Albanian literature and, without forgetting his roots, has crossed frontiers to rise up as a universal voice against totalitarianism."

Albania had very impressive growth in tourism this year. The Albanian government reports that there has been a 42% increase in the number of tourists visiting the country compared to last year. The Albanian private sector in tourism has been growing an average of 30% each year with new hotels, resorts, bars and restaurants. The Albanian economy had the best growth in Europe last yeear. Foreign investments in Albania have increased 59% this year.

It shows that the Albanian economy is developing very satisfactorily - compared with the development in the most recent new EU member states as well, so at least in the economic perspective Albania's aim of coming close to EU membership in the medium term does not appear to be unrealistic.
China's vast manufacturing sector expanded in October at the fastest rate in 18 months, a survey showed on Sunday, and economists said they expected the momentum to be sustained in the coming years.

China's manufacturing sector rose to 55.2 percent in October, up 0.9 percentage points from the previous month, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) said on Sunday.

The index was 0.6 percentage points higher than the number in September, when the PMI edged up only 0.3 percentage points to 54.3 percent. It was the eighth month in a row that the PMI reading stayed above 50.

A reading of above 50 suggests expansion, while one below 50 indicates contraction. The PMI includes a package of indices that measure economic performance.

The survey, conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), covers purchasing and supply managers in more than 700 firms across China. The CFLP launched the PMI in 2005.

The production index in the PMI reached 59.3 percent in October, the highest level since last May.

China third-quarter growth accelerated to 8.9 percent -- the fastest pace in a year -- as the economy powered up an expansion built on a flood of stimulus cash and bank lending.

The world's third-largest economy is on course to meet a government target of 8.0 percent growth for 2009 -- seen as vital to foster job creation and ward off social unrest in the nation of 1.3 billion people.

The 8.9 percent growth revealed by the National Bureau of Statistics was the fastest quarterly expansion in a year. It followed 7.9 percent in the second quarter and 6.1 percent in the first three months, which was the slowest in more than a decade.

China's gross domestic product grew 7.7 percent in the first nine months of 2009 compared with the same period a year ago, after growing 7.1 percent in the first half, the data showed.
