A THREE GOAL WIN IS THE ONLY OPTION​

Without too much ”over” optimism, Kometal is treading carefully but is quietly confident before Saturday’s game against Astroc Sagunto. For Fyro Macedonian women’s handball champion, Kometal GP, a three goal win is the only option. Last year’s runner-up in the Women’s Champion League needs this to secure a semi-final place. So far, Kometal GP always played in a CL final, if they passed the quarter-final mark.

But MAR Valencia (now Astroc Sagunto) has eliminated the Macedonian champions twice already from a quarter- final. In the first game in Valencia last weekend, Astroc Sagunto won 26-24. Both teams had their "five minutes". In the first half time Kometal GP dictated the tempo and results, and in second Astroc Sagunto was the better rival. Kometal GP missed the chance to draw in the last minutes, and Astroc Sagunto players let the guest team to reduce their lead to a four goal difference.

In 2003 Astroc Sagunto defeated Kometal GP twice in the group matches and the Macedonian team was stopped in their quest to defend the CL trophy. Now both teams want to repeat or stop this tradition.

Discipline and completion

”I expect a three goal win, at least. I'm asking for discipline from my players, both in attack and defence. To play fast, without making mistakes to ensure we achieve certain results, that's what we trained this week. The discipline was the key negative side in the first match, something we have to change. We have to play fast in defence and not just run back", said Andriy Portnoy, coach of Kometal GP.

Before Saturday’s game in Skopje, where Kometal GP needs a three goals win, players will watch and make another analyses on the first game. Three days ”quarantine” is something usual for Kometal GP before an important game like this.

"Astroc Sagunto is not a team that we cannot defeat", said right winger Natalija Todorovska. "We'll do everything that our coach is asking because we now that this is one of most important games this season.”

Supporters help

Traditionally, the sports hall in SRC Kale is full and "sold out" when Kometal GP play in CL. Club management and players are asking for "big support" again.

"You're always our eighth player. We need your help again, but to salute rivals also. Sagunto is not a team from absolute European top, but they play well. If you allow to them to "put you in then circle" then you haven't got a chance to win. We remind players that Astroc Sagunto usually plays better on the guest court. So, we need to be more careful, said Ivan Bojkov, club president.

Even the main sponsor, Trifun Kostovski, who is the current mayor of Skopje is optimistic that Kometal GP will be the winner after the game.

"I did not think that we could lose. I am convinced that the quality is on our side. The Spanish are not coming to surrender, but to confirm the victory. This will be the major motivation for them, but, for us also", said Kostovski.

Champions League final ambition

"Our intention is to fight for a place in the final, not just in the semis. I am not considering playing for a 3 goal difference. All difference larger than five goals will show our strength and ambitions. We have to implement the advice of the coach on the court, and success will happen, said Valentina Radulovic, the all-rounder in the team.
