For the record.

@Jane

Е браво ве Јане сите убави институции треба да се во Скопје бидејќи е главен град..?
А кој ќе студира.. распрашај се колку учат во моментов.. btw Охрид е мн. попривлечно место од Скопје.. :bip:

Dear colleagues and friend.
As some of you may have already heard, it was the Rector's decision
that my employment at UIST should come to an end. It was really a
great, great pleasure having worked with all of you and I wish you
great success in everything that you are trying to accomplish at UIST
and in your life. I'm still coming back to Macedonia in August and I
will be there for the next year. So please don't hesitate to contact
me and get together every once in a while. My new email address is
mitrege@auburn.edu. I wold also like to ask you to please delete any
and all communication you may have had with me because such
communication may eventually be used against both of us.

Dear colleagues and friends,

As some of you may have already heard, it was the Rector's decision to do not renew my employment at UIST. I really had a great, great pleasure having worked with all of you and I hoped you enjoyed working with me. I wish you great success in everything that you will initiate.

My future will probably not be so far from Ohrid, as I have been offered a researcher position in a famous laboratory in Computer Science, in Greece, that I am now going to accept. If you want to contact me, please write to mpuigt@gmail.com or mpuigt@ast.obs-mip.fr.

As it was written by George, please delete any and all communication you may have had with me because of possible consequences against both of us.

All the best,
Matthieu

A eve ja pricinata zosto profesorite si zaminale:

Dear Krste and the rest of the students,
Thanks for your support on this. As of three days ago according to the
Rector I was still employed and looked forward to coming back in
August. Obviously at the last moment the Rector decided that he had
other plans for me. Some of you may be glad that professor Puigt and I
will no longer be at UIST, and that's fine. We can't please everyone.
I just want to share few of my impressions regarding my experience at
UIST. First of all, I want to honestly tell you that your are truly a
very, very bright and unique group of students and that you will have
great success in life in whatever you decide to do. Second, I think
you need to be aware of the fact that my working experience has been
working at institutions that are run democratically, professionally,
in a truly academic atmosphere, and where students do really come
first. I'm not saying that this is true for all US universities, but I
would NOT work at any university that does not respect its employees,
it's professors, and most of all its students. I may have done and
said things that are contrary to my beliefs, but I am not a holy man,
I have committed errors in my life, but I do expect my errors to be
judged in a professional, and not in a dictatorial way. Sorry to say
that UIST does lack this professionalism in many ways.

I was not given a reason for why my employment was ended. The Rector
didn't even have the decency to tell me this himself, instead he
ordered his secretary to pass the good news. I'm sure he has a very
good logical and proper explanation, but he must also have another
explanation in the back of his head that he would rather not share
with anyone. My opinion is that the real reason is because I was a
trouble maker for the university. You know very well what my opinion
is about personal privacy and academic freedom, neither of which are
very respected in Macedonian educational institution. My opinion on
this conflicts with that of the Rector. There are other important
conflicting issues as well. I tried to express my opinion and suggest
changes to the Statute of the university, as well as the Student
Handbook, or Rulebook. For example, did you know that if a committee
decided that you have engaged in some immoral or unethical behavior
they can put your name and your misbehavior on a bulletin board,
something like a "Board of shame".
I saw Krste on several occasions
kissing his girlfriend in public, and I'm wondering if this might be
an example of immoral behavior that needs to be reported. I think
China is probably the only country that they still do such things. If
you plan to continue your studies at UIST, and please don't be
influenced by what happened to me, I suggest that you read very
carefully the student rulebook, because you'll be affected by it on
almost daily basis.

Second, In my classes I tried to teach you content that was necessary
for your education and for your career, as well as discuss issues that
relate to what it means to study at a university that follows the
model of a typical public university in the US. From my experience at
UIST I can tell you that the great majority of the students were
excited about this model, they accepted it and they looked forward to
it. From my experience I can also tell you that the only thing that
UIST follows that resembles the US model is that the instruction is in
English.
In every other way, especially in the way it is administered,
it follows examples of some of the worst models in Macedonia. There is
no respect for the most essential aspects of an academic institution,
and that is personal privacy and academic freedom. You take away these
two, and you no longer have an academic institution.
Call it anything
but not a university.
The Rector has asked me to hand over all of my
passwords as well as copies of all of my emails.
My response was that
I would do that "when hell freezes over"
. I hope you are familiar with
this American term. During your education at UIST you might face
similar issues, and you will need to think very seriously how you
intend to respond.

I, and many of my colleagues were really excited to be part of this
experiment and a dream, to start something from scratch and to make it
at least better than what is available now. My personal opinion is
that if the university continues on this path, this is not likely to
happen.
However, you really need to be aware that you have lot of
influence in how the university will progress. You need to be active
in how things are run, you need to object wen you believe things are
done to you unfairly, and never be afraid that you are going to fail a
course as a result of your objections. I have enough respect for my
colleagues to know that they would not demean themselves to that
degree. UIST is no one's personal "tekstilna fabrika". It belongs to
you and the people of Macedonia, you have a stake in it, you will be
educated there, eventually your children might follow you there.

As for my plans, I still have my Fulbright in Bitola for the fall
semester. I will probably remain in Macedonia through next summer and
then head back to my home institution in Alabama.

In several of my lectures we discussed the concept of "critical
thinking" and how to evaluate information. I hope you have acquired
some of those critical thinking skills and you should apply them
whenever you read or hear anything related to UIST, or related to what
happened to Puigt and me.

I can't request or encourage you to write a complaint about all this.
You as individuals have to make a decision on your own. And if Krste
or anyone else asks you to sign a complaint, don't feel intimidated if
you don't agree, just say "no thanks".

Please all of you feel free to keep in touch at my Auburn email
address: mitrege@auburn.edu.

Regards.

Dear Students

I hope that you are enjoying a well-deserved holiday and I am looking forward to see you again in the new academic year. I am also very excited about welcoming new faculty members from Germany, Tunisia, France, England, Belgium, Italy and USA (Princeton University). Considering that our university is still a “baby” (to quote President Ivanov), we have made excellent progress towards realizing our dream of producing world-class, innovative, and skilled graduates who will contribute towards the technological and economic development of Macedonia.

As an educator, it has been extremely satisfying to see the positive changes undergone by many students. In particular, we have seen the change from a go-with-the-flow attitude towards one of motivation, focus and purpose. It has also been very rewarding to see how many students have easily adapted to instruction in English, the global language of communication for science, engineering and IT. Indeed, we are very happy and privileged to be living in Ohrid and to be teaching students of such exceptional caliber.

You are very fortunate to be part of this exciting and visionary initiative and we encourage you to take full advantage of academic programs offered by UIST.

I would like to mention that both Prof Rana and myself were recently offered attractive employment packages at one of the world’s top universities (ranked within the top 5). However, we really identify 100% with the bright outlook and vision of UIST, and hence we declined the offer and chose to stay in Macedonia.

As always, please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss career options or seek advice on any UIST-related issues. Enjoy the rest of the holiday and we look forward to seeing you next semester.

With best wishes

Prof Gregory Hillhouse
