1st Leg - Champions League
Stadium:
The Theatre of Dreams -
Old Trafford, Manchester
It's the English champions versus the Portuguese champions. It's been 5 years since Porto knocked Manchester United out of the competition, winning the Champions League, whereas Manchester United are the holding Champions. In what should be an interesting match-up, the Dragões travel to Manchester to face off against the Red Devils.
After two disappointing losses to Liverpool and Fulham, United have recently won 3-2 against Aston Villa at home. Though the performance left a lot to be desired, especially in terms of defense, it was an improvement from the previous two games. The team's form (past 8, in all competitions) is as follows: WLLWWDDW.
For the game against Porto, a few changes will be made to the team that will inevitably lead to a bit more confidence amongst United fans and the players alike. Vidic, Rooney and Scholes are all available for the match, and they will undoubtedly be looking to perform. Rio's a bit of a doubt, and there doesn't seem to be much news out there as to whether or not he'll be able to play anytime soon, so we'll assume he's been ruled out. Regardless, having Vidic back should be enough of a boost for the back four.
Line-up wise, I think we'll go with something like this:
VDS
O'Shea - Evans - Vidic - Evra
Ronaldo - Scholes - Carrick - Park
Rooney - Tevez
With this match being a mere two days after the league game, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few differences in midfield, but I can't see too many differences elsewhere. Berbatov's still being ruled out, and with Rooney being available, I can't expect anything other than a Rooney and Tevez partnership for this one.
United's form at home in the Champions League is excellent, but as everyone knows, playing the second leg at home is always considered a great advantage. With the first leg being at Old Trafford, United will have to go without conceding and should look to get a goal. It should prove to be difficult, however, especially as Porto will be looking to take advantage of United's sub-par form and Rio's absence.
Come on United!
Porto approach this match high on confidence after beating another team on the weekend, for the league, which was their 8th consecutive away win of the season. The team looked solid at the back, barring a couple of not so good moments and looked threatening up front, even though 3 of their regular starters were out.
Jesualdo will be able to count on Lisandro again, who was suspended on the weekend, Lucho and Rodriguez, who rested against Guimarães, and Freddy Guarin, who returns from injury. Fucile, the starting right-back, and Pedro Emanuel, the team captain, are both injured. Usually, Jesualdo likes to use stupid defensive formations in big matches, but it always back fires, so hopefully he has learned from his mistakes.
So thus, he should field this line-up:
Helton
Sapunaru _ Rolando _ B.Alves _ Cissokho
Fernando
Lucho _ Meireles
Hulk _ Lisandro _ Rodriguez
23 Portuguese Liga, 17 Portuguese Cup, 15 Portuguese Super Cup
2 Champions League, 1 UEFA Cup, 1 European Super Cup, 2 Intercontinental Cup
