"What Ballmer and Leonard did is not federal crime.
It's sport cheating within NBA organization and violation of NBA collective bargaining agreement.

It's not like Beasley, Billups and others rigging games. It's not poker for mafia.

There is no law involved in Kawhi case. His case is pretty much open & shut case that Torre already presented.

You have guy who signed in free agency to Clippers and had under a desk agreement with owner to "get him some extra money".

And Kawhi signed with Aspiration for no-show job, his name was kept hidden from media, and he got pretty much same money Ballmer "invested" in Aspiration. Aspiration was just firm that was used to transfer and wire money out. And took percentage for "favor".

When Aspiration was going under, Kawhi still was "top priority" to pay, despite him doing nothing, mostly because Kawhi's uncle is greedy SOB and asked for more, and that's where other Clippers owner steps in, Wong, and wires even more cash, that fits amount of cash Kawhi will be paid. And nobody, let alone smart millionaire is investing 2 million dollars in company that is going under in last days of it's existence. But funny enough, that very same $2M is being paid to "top priority client" who didn't do anything for Aspiration. Ever.

What makes this case even more damming is that Wong's daughter worked for Aspiration and he had insight in actual situation (company that is firing entire stuff and is going down in blaze of glory ).

Torre also brought whistleblower who confirmed KL being labeled as "priority client".

Kawhi case is really problematic for outlook of entire league. If owners can just "wire up some cash" around salary cap, what's the point of salary cap?
In years where Silver is running around and telling everybody how "parity" is new name of NBA, having owners and players cheating cap space is damming for product.
Also if this isn't isolated case, what stops let's say Jokić, to agree with Shai, to take veteran minimums and sign for i don't know, Clippers, if Ballmer can just wire up $200M for each outside cap? Matter of fact what stops any superstar from taking vet minimum while being paid in real estate, no-show-jobs, private jets, private islands?

It's corruption within a league. But not federal crime since Ballmer is free to "invest" in any company he wants, and that company is free to have contract with any player. Even if that contract is basically that player being hidden from eyes of a public.

You can argue what Giannis did should also be investigated, since upon trading rumors, he got himself involved with Kalshi and that company had direct interest in his free agency, since they literally offer people to bet money on -where Giannis will go. It's very strong conflict of interest for NBA. Yet Mr. Spineless still folded.

If there was no Torre, NBA would probably sweep all this under a rug. Just like they tried with Terry Rozier federal case and Malik Beasley federal case.

In normal league, in world that sport isn't infested with mafia, corrupted billionaires and warlords, Kawhi would have been suspended from day one of Torre's story, so would Ballmer.
But we don't live in fair and decent world. And sports are now just extended hand for "top one percentage" to play with.

Also, Aspiration owner, who is now in jail for fraud, Joseph Sanberg probably used shadow "investments" to wire out money and Ballmer wasn't only one who did it. It's actually common practice how to hide trace of money. And he probably also used Ballmer's name to lure more investors to keep pumping fresh money flow into company, because if former CEO of Microsoft is willing to pump up $50M , than why shouldn't you?
For company/Owner, it's very good look on their portfolio when Big Boys and Once Percent men invest. It gives company credibility.

But also, money "invested" presents equity in bookkeeping, and you can go to bank and loan money as books present stronger cash flow & strong investments. Company simply appears healthier.
