Why were former CCP Defense Ministers Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve? There are currently two main viewpoints. One view is that they opposed Xi Jinping’s plan to attack Taiwan and secretly engaged in so-called “non-organizational activities” disloyal to Xi.These “non-organizational activities” involved preparing politically, economically, and in all other aspects to clean up the mess and take control of China’s situation in the event that a Taiwan Strait war fails.Such activities were not limited to within the military; they also extended to mutual networking between military officials and those in party and government departments. As a “red second generation,” Li Shangfu has long had extremely deep ties with the Deng Xiaoping family. Wei Fenghe also has very close connections with the Jiang Zemin family. This is the most fundamental reason Xi Jinping wants to severely punish these two men. The above view was put forward by former Peking University professor Yuan Hongbing in an interview with The Epoch Times. The other view holds that Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve by the anti-Xi elder faction. After Zhang Youxia was arrested, Liu Yuan — a highly prestigious “red second generation” reformist general in the military, and son of former Chinese Chairman Liu Shaoqi — has already taken control of the 82nd Group Army. CCP elders have entered the underground Xishan Command Center to continue holding meetings. The fully armed 38th Army has its artillery barrels coldly pointed at Zhongnanhai. As soon as the Xishan Command Center issues an order, heavy armored vehicles could flatten Beijing within five hours.Xi Jinping now only has Cai Qi’s Central Office left. His recent trip to Shanghai was to plead with Zeng Qinghong (former Vice Chairman of China) and the Jiang Zemin family. This view was proposed by self-media commentator Jiang Feng, who has over 2 million subscribers/followers on YouTube and X. Which of these two views do you think is more credible? The People’s Liberation Army Daily stated today: “The army holds the guns. There must never be anyone in the military who harbors disloyalty toward the Party, nor any hiding place for corrupt elements. Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, as senior leading cadres of the Party and the army, suffered a collapse of faith, lost loyalty, betrayed their original mission, and abandoned Party principles. Their actions have failed to live up to the trust and heavy responsibility placed on them by the Party Central Committee and the Central Military Commission, seriously polluted the political ecology of the troops, and caused enormous damage to the Party’s cause, national defense and army building, as well as the image of senior leading cadres. The nature of their offenses is extremely serious, the impact extremely bad, and the harm particularly huge. The legal sanctions they received are entirely self-inflicted, deserved, and of their own making.”Judging from this wording, their problem is clearly a political and loyalty issue, not a corruption issue. Otherwise, why can’t they even publicly disclose from whom and how much money was embezzled?

After Bob Kagan writing an article on how the U.S. is facing "total defeat" in Iran (see https://x.com/RnaudBertrand/status/2053741799047655462?s=20), you now have Max Boot - the very author of “The Case for American Empire” and one of the most vocal advocates for the Iraq war - publishing a Washington Post interview explaining that China has surpassed the U.S. in most military domains.

If anything, Boot’s interview is even more devastating than Kagan's piece, because it's not editorial opinion - he’s interviewing John Culver, a former top CIA analyst (he was national intelligence officer for East Asia) and one of the world’s foremost authorities on the Chinese military which he’s been studying since 1985.

This isn't a pundit opining - this is someone who spent decades inside the intelligence community staring at the actual data.

So what is Culver saying?

1) In case of war with Taiwan, the U.S. will flee the theater

This is undoubtedly the single most stunning revelation in the entire piece. Culver says that - as far as he is aware - the Pentagon’s plan in case of war with Taiwan is… flee!

This is the exact quote: "I think some of the thinking in the Pentagon, and it may have evolved since I retired, is that when we think there’s going to be a war, we need to get our high-value naval assets out of the theater, and then we would have to fight our way back in. From where, it’s not clear. Guam is no bastion either."

Why? Because, as he explains, any high-value U.S. assets would be sitting ducks in the entire area. China can strike U.S. forces deployed to Japan, Australia, or South Korea “in a way that Iran really can't” and, given that Iran has hit at least 228 targets across U.S. bases in the Middle East - forcing the U.S. to evacuate most of them - that's saying something. Also, U.S. aircraft carriers would need to operate within 1,000 miles of the fight to matter, which - given it’s well within range of Chinese missiles - they won’t.

As Culver bluntly puts it: “There's really no safe spaces.”

2) China leads in most military domains - and it's not even close

Culver says that “it’s hard to not be hyperbolic” about China’s military capabilities and that, at this stage, “it’s hard to point to an area other than submarines and undersea warfare and say the United States still has an advantage.”

In some critical areas, such as advanced munitions - which, when it comes to war, is pretty damn relevant - his assessment is that China leads by “magnitudes.” As a reminder, an order of magnitude means 10x so, by assuming he knows that and meant what he said, “magnitudes” means at least a hundred times more, meaning U.S. capabilities would be less than 1% those of China.

At the same time, Culver also says that “whichever side runs out of bullets first is going to lose.” So if China produces “magnitudes greater than our industrial base could produce” - as he puts it - then you don't need a PhD in military strategy to put two and two together…

The picture, if anything, is even more damning in shipbuilding capabilities. He reminds that a single shipyard in China - Jiangnan Shipyard, on Changxing Island near Shanghai - “has more capacity than all U.S. shipyards combined.”

Put all Chinese shipyards together and China’s broader naval shipbuilding capacity is 232 times larger than that of the United States (and this is from a leaked U.S. Navy briefing slide).

Culver helpfully adds that China “deploys enough ships every year to replicate the entire French navy” - which, as a Frenchman, hurts a little, but at least we'll always have the cheese (I hope).

3) Despite this, a war in Taiwan is highly unlikely

If your only window into China is Western media coverage, you'd naturally assume all of the above means war over Taiwan is about to break out. After all, if China is so powerful and the U.S. so outmatched, why wouldn't it just take Taiwan and be done with it?

Culver’s assessment - and mine, incidentally - is the exact opposite: China’s increasing relative strength vis-a-vis the U.S. makes war less likely, not more.

How so? As Culver explains Taiwan is “a crisis Xi Jinping wants to avoid, not an opportunity he wants to seize.” The stronger China gets, the less it needs to fight: why launch a war when you can simply wait for the military balance to become so lopsided that the U.S. quietly drops its security guarantee on its own? Culver himself foresees a future “when Americans might start to say, maybe Taiwan is a war we don’t want to get involved in.” That would almost automatically mean peaceful reunification, which has always been China’s primary objective.

This doesn't mean China views the U.S. as harmless. Quite the contrary - Culver says Beijing sees America “as a very militarily aggressive country” that is “declining in power and becoming more violent” as a result. Which he says is one further reason why “war over Taiwan is not something that Xi Jinping is looking for.”

China doesn't want to hand a pretext to a dangerously trigger-happy power - all the more when patience alone delivers what it wants.

4) The game is up

Last but not least, perhaps the most revealing aspect of the interview is that Culver doesn’t seem to see a way out: this is structural and irreversible.

Asked by Boot whether “the Trump administration’s $1.5 trillion defense budget, assuming it’s approved, [would] change the trend lines” (which, as a reminder, would constitute a 50% increase in defense spending), his reply is that “it would probably help to some extent, but I worry that we could be throwing good money after bad.” Not exactly brimming with optimism…

Similarly, when asked why the U.S. keeps investing billions in aircraft carriers and even “Trump-class battleships,” his answer is that it's because “the military services have a nostalgia for the things that meet their expectations for how you get promoted.” In other words, wasted money.

Same thing for the Pentagon's much-hyped “Hellscape” drone strategy to defend Taiwan. Culver asks the obvious question: “What drones are you talking about launching from where?” He points out that they’d “have to pre-deploy them if not on Taiwan itself then on Luzon or the Japanese southwest islands, all of which can be struck by the Chinese.” He adds that this is “the tyranny of time and distance when you look at war in the Pacific.”

The picture that emerges, both from Boot’s Culver interview and Kagan’s article, is remarkably consistent: the U.S. is “checkmate” in the Middle East, would need to entirely flee the Pacific theater before a war even starts, cannot produce enough weapons, cannot keep its supposed “allies” safe, and has no strategy to reverse any of it - nor can one even be produced given the structural nature of the gap. Even a 50% increase in defense spending, Culver says, would be “throwing good money after bad.” That's not my assessment - that's theirs.

Two of America's most prominent hawks, in two of its most establishment outlets, in the space of 48 hours, have essentially published the obituary of American military primacy.

Yesterday I concluded my post by saying that even the arsonists now smell the smoke. Today I'll say: the arsonists are now writing the fire report.

Xi Jinping’s Daughter Faces Call to be Deported From US

Xi Jinping's daughter, Xi Mingze, graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 2014.

Chinese President Xi Jinping's daughter is facing calls to be deported by far-right conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

Loomer said that Xi Mingze still resides in Massachusetts as a foreign student. However, there is no publicly available evidence that she remains in the U.S. The New Yorker reported in 2015 that after graduating from Harvard University Xi Mingze returned to China and has maintained a low profile since.
"DEPORT XI JINPING'S DAUGHTER!" Loomer said in a post to X, formerly Twitter.

"She lives in Massachusetts and went to Harvard! Sources tell me PLA guards from the CCP provide her with private security on US soil in Massachusetts!"

Loomer tagged key figures in the current U.S. administration, including President Donald Trump. She did not provide evidence for these claims or say what her sources were.

Newsweek has contacted Harvard University, the Chinese Embassy in Washington DC, and Loomer for comment.

Why It Matters

Harvard University is squaring off against President Donald Trump's administration in a game of high-stakes legal maneuvering over immigration rules and university autonomy. The Trump's administration has revoked Harvard University's ability to enroll international students, and accused Harvard of promoting antisemitism and collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party. Chinese nationals comprised approximately 20 percent of Harvard's international student enrollment.

What To Know

Loomer urged her supporters to make the subject trend on social media. In her post, she tagged key figures in the administration, including Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, border czar Tom Homan, and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.

While there is no publicly available evidence that Xi Mingze is still living in the U.S., Loomer's allegations come after Rubio announced that the U.S. will begin revoking the visas of Chinese students.

"The US will begin revoking visas of Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields," he wrote on X.

According to a study by the National Science Foundation, 92 percent of Chinese students who earn a Ph.D. in the United States remain in the country five years after graduation, compared to 41 percent of South Korean Ph.D. graduates.

Republicans have made efforts to restrict certain students from studying in the U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt introduced the Protecting Higher Education from the Chinese Communist Party Act, which seeks to ban members of the Chinese Communist Party and their relatives from obtaining student visas to attend American universities.

China has said there should be no disruption to education and urged the U.S. to protect the rights of international students.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China "upholds that normal education cooperation and academic exchanges should not be disrupted" at a press conference on May 28.

"We urge the U.S. to effectively safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of all international students, including Chinese students overseas," she said.

Who is Xi Mingze, Xi Jinping's Daughter?

Xi Mingze, born in 1992, is the only daughter of Chinese President Xi Jinping and folk singer Peng Liyuan. She studied psychology at Harvard University under a pseudonym and maintains a private life with little information released about her. Occasionally, she appears publicly alongside her parents. She worked as a volunteer when she was 16 years old after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

All visa holders at Harvard University, not just students, are currently under increased scrutiny by the Trump administration. The State Department plans to conduct a broad review of student, business, tourist and other visa categories associated with Harvard to assess potential security concerns or procedural issues.

This follows a recent effort by the Department of Homeland Security to revoke Harvard's certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), which enables the university to enroll international students. A federal judge has since issued a temporary restraining order blocking the policy from taking effect.

Rubio has also paused all student visa appointments at U.S. consulates and embassies while his department reviews its vetting procedures.

The Department of Homeland Security recently terminated nearly $3 million in grants to Harvard University after the school did not comply with a list of proposed changes. These included ending its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, revising student disciplinary procedures, and instituting a ban on face masks.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, previously wrote on X: "Trump's decision to suspend student visa interviews threatens nearly $44 billion in economic contributions and over 370,000 jobs across the United States, according to NAFSA. If the United States stops taking foreign students, the economic impact would be catastrophic."
