Scaled Composites Explosion Kills 3

Investigations are under way into the cause of an explosion during rocket component testing close to Scaled Composites' Mojave, Calif. site on July 26. The explosion, which occurred at a remote test site on the airport beyond the area used for aircraft storage, claimed the lives of three people and injured another three.
Initial reports indicated the mishap occurred during tests of an injector for the new rocket motor being developed for the SpaceShipTwo (SS2) program. The incident is believed to have happened during the transfer of nitrous oxide, an oxidizer that will be used in the hybrid rocket engine being developed internally at Scaled for The Spaceship Company, a joint venture between the Virgin group and Scaled.
It is understood that this test, thought to be a 'cold fire' run of the injector, had already been successfully performed on the new SS2 rocket at least once before. It is unknown at this stage if the accident will further threaten the timetable for the launch of the first flights, which had been expected to start in late 2009.
