UMD International Freedom Award is one of UMD's highest honors and the recipient of this Award is selected based on his impact, the record of public service, and the recipient's success in advancing universally accepted principles of justice, peace, democracy, individual freedom and economic opportunity.
For over five decades, Senator McCain has worked tirelessly in pursuit of "the good," becoming one of the nation's most respected public servants. As a leading member of Congress, he has garnered a deep knowledge and understanding of how to ensure and advance universally accepted principles of freedom, and has made every effort to strengthen these principles not only for all Americans but also for all people around the world.
Macedonians have always considered Senator McCain one of the homeland's truest friends. Since Macedonia declared its independence in 1991, he has advocated for peace and stability in Macedonia and Southeast Europe. Since Macedonia opened its NATO Membership Action Plan, he has used every opportunity -- whether here in the U.S. or at events such as the Munich Security Conference -- to urge full NATO membership for Macedonia.
In 2006, he co-sponsored the NATO Freedom Consolidation Act endorsing further enlargement of NATO and facilitating the timely admission of Macedonia into NATO.
