CIA and FBI in Athens to discuss Twitter and Facebook




Officials from the FBI and CIA and the US State Department have arrived in Athens to participatein a closed-doors meeting on October 26 and 27 on matters of "national security", Greek daily VIMA reported on October 22 2009.

The paper says that the meeting itself was initiated by the Greek agency for national security several weeks ago, initiated by the newly created ministry of citizens' security.

Security agencies will discuss various measures to help the authorities monitor social network sites such as Twitter and Facebook, as well as enhance general internet surveillance and security, the report said.

In spite of the fact that the conference in Athens itself was organised by the Greek agency for national security, the National Intelligence Service of Greece KYP will not take part in the discussions, VIMA reported.

Moreover, it is unclear whether members of the Greek police or other Greek security services will be present either.

Around 40 representatives of the Global Future Forum (GFF), founded in 2005 by the CIA, will be at the conference, with security service delegations from nearly 20 different countries, the article says. The last such conference was held in Vancouver, British Columbia.
