The surviving members of Damageplan (music) responded publicly on Friday (12/10) to the death of Damageplan/Pantera (music) guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, who was shot to death during the band's performance on Wednesday (12/8).
"With all his greatness and accomplishments on the guitar, Dime will be missed more for his giving personality, charisma, caring for others, love and most of all his heart!" said Abbott's brother and bandmate, drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott. "Twice as big as the state of Texas! Dime gave it all everyday to each and every one of us and our lives have forever been hollowed without him."
The Abbott brothers--along with Damageplan bandmates Patrick Lachman (vocals) and Bob "Bob Zilla" Kakaha--had just begun a performance at Columbus, OH, nightclub Alrosa Villa on Wednesday night when a deranged fan shot and killed Darrell Abbott.
According to an Associated Press report published on Friday (12/10), witnesses and police said that the gunman--identified as Nathan Gale, 25--jumped on stage during the group's first song, evaded two band members, grabbed Abbott and shot him in the head at least five times. Before being fatally shot by a police officer who responded to the scene, Gale also killed audience member Nathan Bray, 23; local stagehand Erin Halk, 29; and Damageplan's head of security, Jeffrey Thompson, 40.
"Jeffrey 'Mayhem' Thompson was not just a true part of the Damageplan family, but part of the whole Dallas music scene," Damageplan's surviving members said in a joint statement. "He was friend to all, with a great personality. ... He also stated his willingness to protect us, saying 'I'd take a bullet for ya,' and unfortunately did in defense of our lives. He truly lived and died for his friends and made the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life to save ours. For this we will never forget. You will be missed big man."
In addition to those killed, Damageplan's tour manager, Chris Paluska, and drum tech, John "Kat" Brooks, were both shot. Paluska is in critical but stable condition, while Brooks is expected to be released from the hospital on Friday (12/10), according to a press release.
Columbus police officer James D. Niggemeyer arrived at Alrosa Villa within two minutes of a 911 call for help. When he entered the club, Hale allegedly had a hostage in a headlock, had fired into the crowd, and appeared ready to shoot the hostage. Niggemeyer subsequently shot and killed Gale within 60 seconds of his arrival, according to a police spokesperson.
Gale--described as a 6-foot-3-inch former Marine--was obsessed with Pantera, according to a onetime friend quoted by The Columbus Dispatch. The friend, Jeramie Brey, reportedly said that Gale once brought to another friend's house pages of hand-written lyrics transcribed from Pantera's albums, which Gale claimed he had written first.
"He was off his rocker," Brey told the paper. "He said they were his songs, that Pantera stole them from him and that he was going to sue them."
Brey went on to say that Gale once said that he planned to sue Pantera for stealing his identity.
Police still haven't determined a specific motive for the shooting, but some witnesses of the shooting reportedly claimed that Gale was yelling at Abbott for breaking up Pantera when he attacked the guitarist.
Abbott, who was 38, emerged in the early '90s as one of metal's premiere guitarists while part of Texas rock outfit Pantera. The band broke up last year after singer Phil Anselmo said he was pursuing other projects. The Abbott brothers subsequently formed Damageplan, which released its debut set, "New Found Power," in February. The group was planning to head into the studio to record a follow-up set when their current tour ended, according to an audio message from Vinnie Paul Abbott that was posted at the band's website.
About 200 fans gathered outside of Alrosa Villa on Thursday night (12/9) and held a vigil for Abbott, according to reports.
