We covered this last week, but in any case, today's New York Times has an interesting story on the effort to make Macedonia a wireless country. The former Yugoslavian republic is econonmically disadvantaged, so it remains to be seen if bringing wireless access to the people of this region will bring any additional educational or business opportunities they wouldn't normally have.
At this point, the cost of wireless access for most of the population would be $45 a month, which is just way out of proportion for people who on average earn $150 a month. One telecom (Maktel) pretty much rules the roost when it comes to Internet access in Macedonia, and people in and out of the government are looking to open up the marketplace so that wireless access will be much more affordable. Whether that eventually happens is anybody's guess.
USAID has provided $2.5 million to hook up over 400 schools in the country, and there is hope this will be the first step in the breakup of Maktel's stranglehold of the broadband market in Macedonia.
