Champions League Semi-Final 2nd Leg | 5th May | 20:45 h
Stadium: The Emirates Stadium
Arsenal
The Arsenal go into the 2nd leg with a slight disadvantage after failing to score at Old Trafford. We have lost Eduardo to a groin injury, and Arsene has confirmed that Gael Clichy won’t be back in time for our season defining game. Gibbs and Eboué will be in contention for the LB spot, but Arsene may go with the young Englishman to maintain balance in the side, despite Eboué's recent stellar form. Van Persie may make a return to the Arsenal squad, but Bendtner, who bagged a brace at the weekend, is expected to line up alongside Emmanuel Adebayor. Silvestre is expected to return to the side in place of Djourou.
Expected line-up:
Almunia
Sagna - Touré - Silvestre - Gibbs
Walcott - Cesc - Song - Nasri
Bendtner - Adebayor
We may start the game off with a 4-5-1 with Bendtner (left) and Theo (right) coming in from either flank, and a midfield trio to keep it tight until we get a foothold on the game. Hopefully, with the Emirates rocking, we'll take control of the game from the off.
An early goal would be perfect for us, and we could settle the game down afterwards, keeping it at our tempo. Whoever plays at fullback, will have to make sure their crossing game is up to par, as our two big strikers may have a couple of chances to header, especially with van der Saar in goal, who's susceptible to high balls. Almunia may need to put on a repeat of his amazing performance at Old Trafford, as a clean sheet for us could be vital to us going to our 2nd Champions League Final.
Man Utd
After a good performance against the Gunners in the first leg, United travels to London to play the second leg of the semi-finals. Having scored a goal at OT, United goes into this with the advantage. However, United fans know that two goals is all Arsenal needs, should they keep a clean sheet. On the flip side, one goal at the Emirates means that the Gunners need to score at least 3 at home, therefore we know that the key to winning this is to attack, attack, attack.
The question is.. is Rio fit enough or not? It's been confirmed that Rio's rib isn't cracked, and some reports suggest that he should be 'ready to go', however, Sir Alex has brought up Evans, and the fact that he would be good cover. So, what does that mean exactly? Who knows..
Expected line-up:
VDS
O'Shea - Rio/Evans - Vidic - Evra
Fletcher - Anderson - Carrick
Ronaldo - Tevez - Rooney
I expect Tevez to start, over Dimitar, who played the full 90 minutes against Boro. That energy in the attack will be necessary once again, with the attack interchanging and linking up. The midfield will look the same as last time, imo; Fletcher, Carrick and Anderson were all rested for the match against Boro, giving us the indication that they'll be the men used in the midfield.
The key to winning will be to start off energetically, and to do exactly what was done during the first leg. It'll be very important to keep possession, and to finish at least once, as it's obvious that getting an away goal is going to be key for us. United has to play the United way, and needs to control the tempo.
A win or a draw here will see us through to Rome, and a loss will be devastating. I'm confident that if the lads go into this one fearless, willing to attack, that we should have a good chance, but anything can happen. Let's hope the lads put on a good display.
