US SENATE RESOLUTION CALLS ON MACEDONIA TO RESPECT INTERIM AGREEMENT WITH GREECE
A resolution which calls on Macedonia to respect the Greece- Macedonia Interim Agreement from 1995 and to refrain from unfriendly propaganda against Greece, similar to the one recently proposed to the House of Representatives, has been proposed to the US Senate, A1 TV said.
Political analysts believe that the new resolution is far more serious than the previous one, considering that it has been tabled by Senators Obama and Mendenez, both members of the Democratic Party, which has a majority in the Congress. After Hilary Clinton, Barack Obama is one of the most serious US presidential candidates, whereas Senator Mendenez is the first senator that backed Hilary Clinton's candidacy for president, A1 TV said.
US State Department spokesperson Tom Casey yesterday declined to comment on the resolution proposed to the Senate, but said the US supports a peaceful solution to the name dispute and encourages the two courtiers to continue with the UN sponsored negotiations in order to find a mutually acceptable solution to the name dispute. "We want to
see the two countries cooperate in a friendly way and refrain from actions that can impede the process of finding a solution to the name dispute", Casey said.
A1 TV said the Greek lobby in the US managed to add the reference FYROM next to Macedonia's constitutional name in the Congress resolution on support for Macedonia's membership in NATO adopted in March this year. The latest resolution calls Macedonia by its full name registered in the UN and by the abbreviation FYROM.
Channel 5 TV said the Democrats are traditionally close the Greek Diaspora in the US. The latest resolution signals that the pre-election bargain for the Greek votes for the US presidential election has already started. The resolution has thus far been backed by three senators, but their number is expected to increase, as in the case of the resolution proposed to the House of Representatives, which condemned Macedonia for conducting an anti-Greek campaign. This resolution was initially signed by five congressmen, but their number has now increased to 75, Channel 5 TV said.
