MACEDONIA: Hydro Power Plants Privatization Underway
2006-04-17 19:51:11
Only a month after the sale of Electric Distribution, the preparation process for the privatization of the big hydro power plants has started, was announced in the television station, A1. The hydro power plants are the last high value part of the Fyrom economy yet to be privatized, energyobserver.com reports.
Referring to sources in the Ministry of Economy, TV A1 claimed that the World Bank and the Government of Fyrom has already been working on the documents which will be the basis for the sale of the hydro power plants.
Models for concession agreements, which are prerequisites for entering that process, have already been considered.
Note that the government of Fyrom, under pressure from the competent public, gave up the sale of hydro-energy potentials last year, promising that that they would be the object of privatization at the end of the entire process.
Experts warned, however, that the sale of the electricity production capacities of Macedonia should wait.
They said that first the effects of the recent sale of the distribution network should be seen, and after that the privatization of production capacities should begin.
The biggest hydro power plants are Kozjak, Spilje, Globocica, Tikves and the Mavrovski system.
