Every Other Prostitute in Brussels Is from Bulgaria's City of Sliven - Report
Every other prostitute in Brussels is from the Bulgarian city of Sliven, according to an extensive article published in the Belgium daily "Le Soir", the Bulgaria Information Agency (BTA) reported.
The article is dedicated to the official opening of the international three-day
congress in Rio de Janeiro focused on sexual exploitation of children and adolescents.
The article cites a statement made by an employee of the Belgium Federal Police Unit for fighting human trafficking as saying: "
We know that out of 200 prostitutes in the Gare Du Nord neighborhood, 70% are Bulgarian and 70% of them are from the city of Sliven or adjacent areas.
Bulgaria - the Biggest Prostitutes Supplier for Brussels
Sad but true, three-fourths that is about 75% of the prostitutes practicing near Gare du Nord in Brussels come from Sliven, southeastern Bulgaria. The area is Brussels's notorious red light quarters.
Of a total of 250 sex windows, 200 are Bulgarian, of which 180 are occupied by girls from Sliven, according to Petko Cholakov from the Organized Crime Combat Service with Sliven District Directorate of the Police. The anti-mafia task officer was one of three Bulgarian policemen invited by the Belgian authorities for synchronization on human trafficking. Cholakov has been working against human trafficking for years and two years ago managed to bust a channel for babies traffic towards Greece.
Thanks to the fruitful joint operations of police officers from Bulgaria and Belgium, the most of Sliven pimps working in Belgium, moved to Norway and in the last a couple of months reportedly occupied Oslo.
Cholakov believes that the area near Sliven, and especially the Southern Black Sea coast, have become a huge money laundry. Most of the pimps reportedly invested the dirty money into the developing business and now they are proud owners of hotels and enormous villas in the mountains or at the seaside in Bulgaria.
Organised Prostitution in Macedonia
Many prostitutes brought to Macedonia originate from Eastern European states, particularly Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania, Moldova, and Russia. But Serbia is also an increasing source of new recruits. The women are often deceived into believing they are coming to the West to work as dancers, waitresses, or even striptease artists. But even those who understand they are to work as prostitutes do not anticipate the slave-like conditions awaiting them.
The growth in the prostitution trade dates back to the late 1980s and the appearance of groups of 'exotic dancers' from Bulgaria, Ukraine and Russia in the handful of discos, nightclubs and coffee bars in the Skopje area.
Nevertheless, police investigations this year have resulted in the arrest and deportation of only 20 foreign prostitutes, of which fifteen were from Bulgaria, four from Romania, and one from Moldova.
